And don't hit me for this one - but, what are drum rudiments? The drum basics? Practices? Warmups? Altoids with an attitude?

omfg You're kidding right? You're such a funny guy. Next you'll say you don't know what paradiddles are... That's uh, two diddles.

lol

Huullooo! Self taught. That means, self taught. No lessons, no reading music, no nothing... just sit down and bang the drums until something comes out. I actually learned drums to "Wild and Loose". I drove my family crazy, playing that on song, over and over and over. I bet you wont find any paradooleys on THAT song...

I've been bangin' away on some drums myself lately also. At my chruch, we have a set there. I have been trying to keep my hands and feet in synch, and I am getting better. I have always been awkward. I have lots of soul but I am clumsy- so, my coordination I have to work on, but I am getting better. Practice is the best solution!

Peace,
JD

white people don't have rhythm. Especially on the drums.

It's a natural fact you know.

Rudiments are like scales but for drum kit. Only they are more a part of everyday drumming than scales can be for other instruments. Its the first thing I teach mate

Heres the most basic ones, R=Right hand L=Left Hand

Singles - R L R L R L R L

Doubles - R R L L R R L L

Paradiddle - R L R R L R L L

Double Paradiddle - R L R L R R L R L R L L

Triple Paradiddle - R L R L R L R R L R L R L R L L

Okay, I'm trying this thing right now, at work, and people keep asking me why I'm saying "Right! Left! Right! Right!" so loud... I just can't see how this is going to improve my playing.

It's about time we had some more excitement in this forum!

nutty

Hey, anybody know what a phlegm paradiddle is? (Drum humor. Hey, where is Chewy when you need him?)

hmm

Seriously though, rudiments are for drummers, not drum machines. They are practice exercises, to help keep you steady. (I'm guessing. My best friend used to take drum lessons.) Ok, back to being crazy...

You a fan of drummers like Steve Gadd & Blackwell?? Thats what they are doing, as I said these are basic examples but every drummer is playing combinations of rudiments in whatever they do whether they realise it or not. Practising these improves the speed of your hands, your ability to use any combination of right & left without thinking about it. Rudiments goes further into things like Linear Phrasing where you are using both feet too.

Dont just take my word for it though, ask any drummer who knows their sheeit & they'll tell ya rudiments is where its at. Theres thousands of different rudiments of varying difficulty some are fantastic & really usable & some take a little imagnation to get something interesting out of them.

When I started learning drums, I hated these. It was always the boring part of a drum lesson & I never really practised them apart rom in the lessons. I used to really admire Dave Weckl's drumming & remember listening to his solo CD when I was about 10 & was in awe of his speed & technique. Then one day it got to the drum solo bit & I thought 'wait a minute, that was a paradiddle'...'I can do those!!!' After that my playing aint been the same as I realised the difference between what I was doing & what he was doing, He knew about rudiments & the endless possbilitys there are with them & I didnt.

Ive got tonnes of examples using just these three rudiments as to what can be done with them that I write out for my pupils, do you read drum music??? I can send them to ya if you like

Seriously, that would kickass Cloud.

I know what you're talking about, I'm just being a dumbass. I'm down with the paradiddles... they're a great band. And yeah, I do know how to play some of them, learned about them long ago and thought "oh damn I gotta get up on this stuff so I'll be badass when I'm 38, instead of just crappy and with a sore back".

So much for knowledge.

Thanks for all the help you drummers. And Bigthing.

No probs, I'll see if I can get em into the computer.

One of the ideas is quite easiy explained. Play a paradiddle between your snare & your hi hat with the right hand on the hats & the left on the snare as normal. Each time you find yourself hitting a hi hat, hit the bass drum with it. Let me know what you get, its one of the many drum licks Im working on. Paradiddle based drum beats wink

Hi Otan,
The best that I can do for you if you want to
improve your drumming is to tell you to:
Take it easy.
I know, I know what it's like to sit there
and want to whip out cool fills and snazzy shit,
but the best way for you to advance if that is
what you want is to play VERY basic beats
and rhythms. Play slow. Things you can handle.
Don't worry about fills and paradiddles.
Get really good at keeping solid tempo and
basic beats. When you do get good at that,
then move on to adding a basic fill that you
can get good at and then move on from there.
For beginners I recomend playing along with
Talking Heads records because that dude
(Chris Frantz) plays such simple beats. smile
I pretty much tought myself drums when I was
a kid playing along with my Beatles records.
Ringo was nice and simple. smile
Even now, when I am having trouble pulling
something off I usually figure out that I
am trying to hard. By stripping down or
slowing down what I am trying and taking my
time with it, I eventually work it out.
I get the idea that you would like to just
jump on to the tape deck and whip out some
killer beats, but being talented like yourself,
I'll bet if you put some work into it, you
could play some killer drums! biggrin
headbang go for it!
"Hyperactive when I was small, Hyperactive now I'm grown, Hyperactive 'till I'm dead and gone"

I just started playing drums for demoing purposes so a lot of this is really helpful! Now I'll know what the hell some of my drummmer friends are talking about! I've actuaLLY found that it's really good to play along with hip hop tunes cuz the beats are simple and funky but also the time is real consistant because they use drum machines. Good luck!
