THE BALLAD OF DOROTHY PARKER-drums

I don't consider myself a musician, mainly cause I have yet to learn to play an instrument,so please pardon the intrusion.
Okay,I'm about to ask a question that might sound stupid, but I ask that you have some pateince and tolerance for my ignorance. smile
So,one of my favorite things about the above song is the drumming, you know right after he says,"dishwater blonde, tall and fine, she got a lot of tips well",he taps on the drums I think 3 times, then goes back to the original beat..of course,he does this some more throughout the song...anyway,can someone here tell me what that's called,is that what a lick is,or is that what syncopation is,I have looked up these terms, and gone to drummer websites, and what I'm finding isn't very understandable to me.
If I were to discuss this song with someone,I DON'T wanna say,"I love the way he taps on the drums every so often",i wanna use a term a musician might use.

And while we're on the subject, how come modern R&B songs don't have drumming like this, the modern beats bore me?

It's called a drum "fill".

Prince is using a Linn Drum (LM1) in this song and he plays several fills over his programed pattern.

Although I am not responding to your question directly (because I don't really know), I did want to say this...

Why are you apologizing for a question you have?? I mean, there is no such thing as a "stupid question" anyway...

Feel free to post anything you want regarding inquiries you may have. It's your site as well as the ones that are so-called "knowledgeable" in things such as these...

And, to those who would even consider flaming you for a legitimate question...have some patience. There are some of us who don't know everything, and only seek educational advice...

Just my 2 cents...

Because the public have been trained by the media to believe that the normal 1,2,3,4 drum beats should always be used. Whenever an artist puts out something that sounds "different" than the rest, it is automatically branded weird and not accepted as a normal thing. The drum in "TBODP" is one that I kind of use sometimes. There is more diversity to beats like that.

Also, most of these drums I just feel out and make the beats. I don't read much music, I just feel and play.

Peace,
JD

Exactly! You don't know how many times I've tried to tell people this, that music is purposefully crappy, so that it never has to be challenged, and by saturating the market with this easy music, the lame flock that only does what the trend-setters tell them to do forget what good music sounds like. It's such a crime. Should be punished.

Hey,
you know what else i love about the drums
on Dorothy Parker?
If you listen close to the drumming on the
ONA Live It Ain't Over version, John
Blackwell is playing the exact drum pattern
as Prince's original linn program.
I think that is cool. smile
