I get it all the time. Its because I practise about 5 hours a day & I find I exhaust all my ideas before Im through. Theres 3 things I nromally do. 1. Stop! and try again later 2. Listen to other music for inspiration 3. Just start playing & record it, you'll be surprised how many good ideas you come up with when your just playing & not trying to write something. But also, I rarely try to force it as Ive never been able to just sit down & write a song. I have to be inspired by something & or the idea has to just happen. Whenever I sit down with the intention to write, not a lot happens. [This message was edited Fri May 9 15:04:53 PDT 2003 by cloud9mission]

Writer's block is all I've had lately.
I have several books on songwriting, and the common thread in both books is to write, write, write, everyday. I don't. But the theory is, you write about whatever, and when you sit down to write lyrics, you have certain phrases/patterns locked in, just the same as you have common riffs you use as a musician. I use self-medication to open up the floodgates sometimes, but, 95% of the time, I end up with pure crap when I go that way. I've got enough scraps of lyrics and ideas that I just need to go outside and turn off the tv and listen to my brain. Have a great weekend guys. The Last Otan Track: www.funkmusician.com/what.mp3

when i get writers block...
i empty my pockets, throw away everything i own, except for a few article of clothing, take a bus outside of the city to the middle of no where, then hitch hike across the country. i usually go to arkansas, mpls (to see the park), and florida. the process usually takes a month or so. then i head back home to New York City. by the time i get back, i usually have plenty on my mind. LOL Sexaftertaste! Usually, my mind thinks a million miles per hour, so I am writing down ideas all day at work. So, whenever I seem to get caught up in thoughts about other things, I always have a full folder of songs or ideas for songs that I go to. So, I never have a shortage of material. I always have a beat ready, I always have lyrics ready.

I get lot´s of ideas just by sounds.
Testing out a new keyboard, experimenting with effects gives me something 2 get inspired by. I might not have a song in my mind, but just a sound, or a feeling.Once I get this "perfect" sound 2 vibe from I use that 2 try 2 create something in that flavour. /peace Manki

Their are so many sounds and the right one hits you and you go with it. I think the most important thing to do is show up and try something. Somedays, nothing happens creatively and that's OK, just edit something, listen to your works in progress and make a change. If after an hour or so, nothing really magical happens, then it just isn't the day for it. Then you have those days when you're trying to get ready for work and a melody comes into your head, you can't say no, you HAVE to put it down.
