The music we've heard is just okay. But I'm always interested in a story behind a song, even if the song is mediocre or bland. I ordered the album for collection purposes (I'm only buying new or SDE versions, not all that purple vinyl kitsch). And I'll listen with an open mind. But based on the title track...eeehhhhhh.

We'll see.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

2010-2016 def some of Ps most uninspired work for sure. Although its gonna be great to hear all these tracks (some of which we've all heard) this period was filled with alot of filler tracks and alot of meh tracks...

I suspect the reason this was not released at the time is that there was no record company or even newspaper deal on the table because there are no great songs on the album.

Hope I'm wrong as I've ordered a copy of the vinyl.

I don't expect the album to be a lost classic but from what I've heard so far I expect to enjoy it. Probably will rate it about 7 or 8 / 10. On a par with albums such as Musicology and Hit n Run 2.

I think a feature of the album is going to be the inclusion of others sharing the vocals on many songs. Amongst the org members I don't think that will go down well.

I get a feeling 1010 (Rintintin) will be the real stinker on the album.

Shame the podcast doesn't start next week or the week after.

I was thinking that as well; He had exhausted (or pissed off, depending on who you ask!) all his release outlets. Then he went crawlin' back to WB...

Not normally a fan of Prince doing cover versions (Although I love his version of One Of Us)

But i'm actually super hyped to hear his version of "Stand Up And Be Strong"

The chorus should sound great in his voice and the guitar work will hopefully be high in the mix

he might have better luck if he was drummin with his Dick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was expecting Same Book and 1 Thousand Light Years to be different than we versions we have - but it doesn't sound like it from those clips?

I think "Same Page" is the same track, but "1000 Light Years" is similar but much longer than the bit added as a coda to "Black Muse"

Coda = 3:05

Full Length = 5:46

he might have better luck if he was drummin with his Dick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1000 light years fro here sounds quite different with added vocals, different instrumentation and no horns. Also, it sounds a bit slower than the HNR2 version.

The clip is definitely unfamiliar, but couldn't it just be from a different point in the song rather than a different version?

This is how I feel as well. I love hearing the behind-the-scenes making of a song, even if I don't particularly like a song. And sometimes those stories can get me to re-evaluated my opinion of a song.

I'm probably only buy the SDE CD set. I don't want or need the vinyl. However, if I understand correctly, the vinyl set is the only one with the DVD. That is tempting me to buy it.

I hope this podcast doesn't get derailed by politics like the SOTT SDE podcast. I appreciate that the era's politics provide context, and I would have had no objection to a brief conversation on the topic, but it just went on and on too long.

Plus, the Professor (I think she was from Harvard?) didn't provide a objective, nuanced or sophisticated analysis of the era. She came across as a zealot rather than an academic. I have a graduate degree in political science myself and worry that people like her give our discipline a bad name.

And for the record, I didn't object to her analysis because I'm some right-winger. To the contrary, I'm a life-long liberal. Nevertheless, I could recognize that her facts were often wrong, her assumptions were disconnected from reality, and her explanations were grossly oversimplified. She created a cartoonish narrative for the world and then bended the facts and manufactured motivations to fit within it. She was more tribal than ideological. If I was debating a right-winger, she's the last person I'd want backing me up.

I'm very excited for this record. I love the songs released so far, and I can't wait to hear the rest. I think his final decade of output was top notch, except for maybe MPLSound, which I still don't really like.

The ironic thing is that many positions of the modern progressive movement are decidedly illiberal. They've completely flip-flopped on a number of fundamental issues. Things that used to be considered left-wing are now considered right-wing. It's a stange world we're living in.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Everyone with their eyes open can see the narrative certain people keep trying to push and hopefully we can all see through it

Hard to believe I've been on the org for over 25 years now!

Politically Prince moved from right to left (and back agian!) over his life, and if looked at correctly by someone who knows their shit, would be interesting to hear their views - (Ronnie talk to Russia), but what with the whole way things are moving politically (no Xtra Loveable) in America, it suits the Estate to play down certain aspects of Prince's beliefs and play up the ones which chime well with some of the current opinions (Donald Trump Black Version).
