They made me laugh. They made me cringe. They saw things I totally missed. UTCM sales shoot up.
Time keeps on slipping into the future...

Glad you liked it. Its their job to basically trash (in a humorous way) every movie reviewed so it was a nice surprise to hear the many positive comments. If you listen to other episodes you can tell they genuinely, for the most part, enjoyed UTCM. Paul, Jason and June are podcast greats in my opinion. I reccommend checking out earlier classic episodes on Burlesque, The Last Dragon, Over The Top, and Staying Alive.

This link led me down a YouTube rabbit hole and I stumbled upon this review

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfytjV4Ytyg

At about 36 minutes in, they posit the idea of "what it turned out that Prince was a vampire in this movie" and, you know what? That would have improved it a lot and I could actually see it. Makes the bats and the Bela Legosi eyes shit make more sense.

Agreed. I love shit like this where funny people take a huge but affectionately aimed shit at a well meaning but relaly shitty film.

I think the "Prince is really a vampire" folks are really onto something and the more I think about it , the more I like the idea. It would explain SO MUCH of the weird shitthat happens in this crazy movie.

Wouldn't begin to explain Grafitti Bridge but, well, you know...baby steps.

That was cute. SO easy to get stuck down one of those rabbit holes. Wasn't aware of MovieBitches. Thanks!

"Prince is thé 'femme-fatale' in this movie noire."

''...garçon, garçon..."

"I'm not sure if he knows how to kiss"

"all of the passion was feeling so very wrong"

In the grotto; "candles, fingers intwined, candles, fingers intwinded..."

"They keep reffering to colours, why is this movie not in colour ?"

"the camera moving is makin me nauseous"

"why were there bats in there?"

"...Tricky and Christopher as a gay couple..."

"...all these things are normal in the Prince world."

"Christin Scott Thomas is 32... becomming 21"

LOL

But two of 'm didn't see the movie Purple Rain 'yet'.

I also love the story that Prince brings soup to his neighbours (in Minneapolis), and crashes their birthday party.

-

I loooooooooove this.

And indeed, maybe we should see the movie UTCM not as a movie.

That doesn't make sense really.

But rather as a very long video (like an exteded 12") full of Prince jokes from his own bizarre young world and how he likes us to see him in this new (fake) luxury.

And most important, there's no need to understand the story.

This is an absurd humorous movie - more like a Salvator Dalí kind of bizarre video.

"The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves. And wiser people so full of doubts" (Bertrand Russell 1872-1972)

Prince should never have been allowed to direct not one but TWO movies

Astonishing.

Big, bad, evil oppressive Warner bros, letting prince direct films without any experience directing.

I kinda agree with their take. It's a bad movie, but brilliant and loads of fun. It has too much in it, with a lot of it just Prince having fun. But there could actually be a good movie made from it, but it would require editing and some rewrite and it wouldn't have been nearly as much fun. It'd be one of those 50s Rock Hudson/Doris Day type movies.

It is so good. They look at it as fans of him as well as from a cinematic point of view. They went into things that I never thought about...it will make you run to watch it again.

I want them to do a running play along commentary on the movie with cues to plause as needed.

Exactly. P's biggest mistake was taking over the Director's Chair IMO...and that horrible ending.

Too bad the podsters didn't know about Prince's love for this era of old glam b&w Hollywood. Cudda referenced Girl O My Dreams, Condition of the Heart, his Marilyn Monroe crush.

Also, I never saw the Bela Legosi eyes scene as "rapey."

I fail to see the brilliance of UTCM, and think that it was a cheesy, bad movie, always have, always will.

They agree it was a cheese fest but they also see how many classic film ideas are used...like it was several other kinds of movies in one. How in its own absurd way it works.

I've never seen a movie like this before. Actually, the first thing I reacted to was how boring it gets in the end. Snoozefest.

The editing and shots just go against all type of traditional directional tricks. Like the 360 shot in the restaurant which, like they pointed out, leads to nothing. Mary just casually walks in.

The good thing about the movie is, how beautiful Prince was looking during these sessions. I think he looked his worst during the tail end of Parade going into 1987. Clean shaven and short hair with to much eyeliner. Horrendous. But here, man he is stunning. That hair is timeless and impeccable. The make-up is perfect and really transcends his eyes. Also, this was made in 1986 and I still can't comprehend how he could pull of those clothes! In theory it shouldn't work, but he pulled it off perfectly. And no one has ever tried or could compete with that to this day.

I have never seen a weirder ending. So Tricky is reading this sentimental letter from Mary and then starts to harass his girlfriend and then....cut to the sky and the Mountains video. What the actual f*ck!

This movie is going to get the same cult following and in three years blow up as an phenomenon, just like The Room did.

And the complicated part is that it is tied together with maybe his best era of music and songs in our community, and presented and intended for this movie. UTCM is going to be a wild ride to follow via YouTube reviews and explain that this was also his genius period during his 80's run.
Such a unique experience this will be.

Yeah, and as bad as I thought it was, I still own it on DVD, along with his other movies. Although I never watch it, I just had to have it for my Prince collection, because of my love for the man. biggrin
