NFO: So now what?

Should we start promoting and telling all our friends they can download our cd?

We gotta wait until Lewis/Cloud9's site is up - that's a critical part of the whole experience, in my opinion. The other site is nice, but it wasn't part of the original plan... but that's just my pinion, I know nothing.

I agree. Lewis can have the UK site also, and we can hit this thing from both sides of the globe.

Personally, i think that Cloud should either put up or shut up. So far, the only one doing some work is our mystery person.

That's just my opinion, but... like Otan; i know nothing!

OH, if I had a dime for everytime somebody pulled their toys out of this artsy birthday party gone wild. That's it, I'm pulling all of my work on NFO2.

You guys are just going to have to begin work on NFO3!

No. I've got that site done too. Sorry. Looks like you'll just have to start a, uh, "NEWER Funk Order".

I never knew artists could be so sensitive about stuff. It just breaks me up. I'm laughing on the outside because, well, because I am. But on the inside, well, I'm laughing there too. This is all just too giddy to take seriously... yes, even if I were the one that did all the work on the web site. I've done lots of work on sites that never came to fruition - I see it was research.

Come on Lewis - what's the story morning glo-stick?

The newfunkorder site is awesome, if not a little on the "minimalist" side.

Ive just realised that whoever set up the other site didnt think about what we'll do for those with slow computers who would prefere to be mailed a CD. I'll make sure we everything handeled with forums, guestbooks & some funky flash but designed & run so we can just sit back & watch it run.

Have we decided whether we wanna make a profit here cos theres two ways I can do this:

1. We make a small amount of profit on the CD that is distributed fairly by the third party company I use to all who contributed to the CD

2. We make no profit & offer free downloads & simply charge the cost of a CD & shipping for the mailed CD option.

Another idea, whichever option we choose, is that I could place some multimedia on the CD too with a link to the site & some other CD rom type stuff.

Let me know.

Lewis

PS. I wanna get you guys input into the design of the site too. That way we get something that looks good & we're all happy with wink

lol. Gotta upload it & shit yet, but I have set up the server to accomodate the site & begun shaping the php interface so that any member of the NFO can get in & update their site details & so that we can all co moderate the forum. Ive also set up a site stats system so we can see how our projects doing. Just doing the boring preparations & programming for the site really before the real work begins.

Now I know whats going on though & that Im not designing a site for newfunkorder.com & am instead hosting & creating the site on cloud9mission.com I can actually begin doing stuff

wink

I would go for Option 2, Except for the charging part, My music = Free

Yeah but CDs & shipping aint. I agree with your choice entirely as I think we'll certainly reach a wider audience if we dont make a profit but dont wanna lose money either. I'll look into making it cost free for both partys wink

Let's keep New Funk Order azitwere. Otherwise I will have 2 dub it... "New Funk ODOUR". Do as Lewis says and if :I: can append, leave that cry-baby sh*t in the General Discussion 4rum.

Sorry Jason, just my two pence.

Hey everyone- (for Lewis in particular), are there non-profit laws over there that allow you to write off charitable gifts or donations on your taxes? Why don't we use this the same way. I don't know about you, but it only costs me about 50 cents or less each to make a CD and 3 dollars or less to ship a bundle of 5. Even if volume got high, (which, lets be realistic, our volume will not be extremely high, because this is not a "professionally" promoted or recorded CD), we would still be able to achieve the supply of the CD.

I say that it remains all free. We should promote this as a non-profit gift and try to pitch it to a couple of distributors in the same manner- as a charitable gift. The distributor could then in return write off their labor and materials also. In the meantime, we just offer it free on both sites.

Peace,
JD

I think we should charge $100 and include access to backstage at any shows for a year... and maybe a set of steak knives.

Sexaftertaste emailed looking for suggestions...and thought I'd reply food for thought here as well.

The idea of a global collective distributing FREE music is certainly an angle I haven't seen done yet and certainly the opposite angle of what most artists are trying to fight. Therefore it's a right angle gone full circle. And I do think it would make news.

Time to pull missions:
a) press 50 copies
b) research the names and addresses of the 'News Editors' at all major global News Networks
c) compile a SIMPLE press kit (story, CD, contact number) and hit the news networks
d) Let it fly and watch what happens.

However, be prepared with an up and running web site, free music for the download, mission statement, news of forthcoming NFO projects and how to become part of the collective. Choose a spokesperson for interviews with the media. Then, as the project and the players become stronger (hell you could even incorporate real established Artist involvement every now and again...imagine D'Angelo or Common or endless list of contributors... lending 8 bars to a NFO project (they all approachable, especially when ya got news). NFO could eventually become a place where it really is 'all in the collective mix'.

And of course the ultimate...kinda like how all the 'rebirth of cool' volumes were collected...create various volumes for sale, but still keeping to the mandate mission of offering various FREE downloads.

Start here.

The problem is that they still charge, and that costs everyone money (sorry about the Yogi Berra-ish quote). But, that's true. I believe that it needs to be free until further notice. I really like Red's idea. Here is Red's idea.

Are we REALLY going to push this with press releases, radio, etc? I mean, more power to ya, etc, but these songs, for the most part, are all rough demo quality.

I know this will be met with negativity and incredulousness, but folks, these songs have all been produced in home studios, not truly mastered, I don't know if I would REALLY consider these anything more than a great collection of hobbyists music.

And yes, SOME folks will love this stuff, but I hardly feel it's up to the level of quality one would expect at anything other than a not-for-profit radio station.

Again, I mean NO offense to anyone, I am not pointing fingers at anyone, I'm merely pointing out that maybe the second one would be more worthy of some sort of global free distribution to radio stations, etc - this one is a great project to see what's out there, but I honestly feel like this collection is no different than a bootleg of Prince's unreleased material - some songs are jewels in the rough, some more rough than others, and they all sound like great ideas that aren't professionally finished.

After seeing all the positive posts about pushing the disc, selling copies and sending copies to radio stations - I dunno guys - I feel horrible bringing this up because we're ALL very excited about the project, and I don't want to add any more negativity to the project than already hovers overhead, but at the same time, I don't think we should be pursuing anything beyond internal 'org notoriety at this point.

BUT, it's just my opinion. If I get anybody's panties in a twitch, I humbly apologize.

Where's your punk attitude? Doesn't matter the quality of the sound, oh of course it matters, but I think our goal is to spread free music (a cd and paper is not free) and to be heard on a larger scale than we could if each one were all by themselves. I don't think nobody is tripping they'll hit radios. razz
