Peach and Black 1999 SD Review Part 2

Ahhhh…one of the great things about new released Prince material is the inevitable Peach and Black discussion afterwards – so just wanted to say….Thanks! One of the main things about your podcasts is that it makes me want to revisit the music again to hear the things that my dumb ears didn't pick up on initially. Case in point is the opening 2 tracks – “Feel u up” and "Irresistible Bitch” which I initially thought were pretty good, but prefer the officially released versions. But after hearing your discussions, I hear so much more which I overlooked and enjoy them a damn sight more now. (Basically, I think I need to turn the bass up a lot more in my equalizer, full stop!)

.

I’ve also got to back Toejam up massively when it comes to the original album version of “International Lover”. I love this song too – a great metaphor and a fantastic vocal performance in my opinion. I just don't get how Captain and MC can think Prince is being serious at all? His tongue is so firmly in his cheek, it’s tearing out the side of his face! It reminds me of when Prince famously said at Wembley on the 1986 Parade tour after ‘humping’ his microphone “If you take any of this shit seriously, then you’re a bigger fool than me.” The studio version on this set is a welcome addition too – so clear, relaxed and effortlessly bewitching.

.

I’m also loving the new little titbits you’re putting into the podcast where when you’re identifying little musical noodlings within the songs, you’re isolating them, then cutting and pasting them in there too alongside your discussions so us listeners know what you’re banging on about which is a VERY welcome and lovely touch. I usually listen to the podcast whilst working and walking, so don't get the opportunity to find that little synth run buried in the mix at 5:41 there and then to know what you're discussing.

.

Anyway, looking forward to the next instalment (and to how many times you’re going to say “at 2:10 he does this, at 2:26 he does that etc etc" during “Purple Music)…
