So i tried to write a Prince tribute...

I tried to write a Prince tribute. I'm not sure how mega accurate it is, since I'm a relatively new fan, but I tried. smile
Constructive criticism is more than welcome, but please be nice.

[verse 1]
Long before I knew you,
You were nothing more
Than a name on dated records,
Drifted in from distant shores.
The king had had the throne awhile
Before your reign began,
I was just a little child,
And you'd long been a man.

[verse 2]
Knew you had the killer style,
Down with #2.
A symbol for the lovers
And the things that lovers do.
I only knew the lyrics,
But I didn't know the song.
I guess I shoulda learned it,
But I thought I'd play it wrong.

[chorus]
Play those blues and funky tunes,
And dance this life away.
The royal with the royalties
Every time the music plays.
Hear the call of millions
Who can never say the name.
And stand beside them
In the bleeding rain.

[verse 3]
They say the brothers warned you,
"You'd better take it slow."
They worried 'bout a flood,
But why not let the river flow?
They tried to chain the songbird,
But from their nest you'd flown.
They branded you a slave, but no,
You labeled you your own.

[chorus]
Play those blues and funky tunes,
And dance this life away.
The royal with the royalties
Every time the music plays.
Hear the call of millions
Who can never say the name.
And stand beside them
In the bleeding rain.

[verse 4/bridge]
Baby, you were much too fast,
To now, from way back then.
I wish we could bring back the past
And try it all again.
Wish I'd been there to hold you
Beneath that morning sun.
The Lord will have his way, but Lord,
The story wasn't done.

[modified chorus]
Now who'll play those blues and funky tunes,
And dance this life away?
Who'll claim the royal's royalties
Every time the music plays?
Who'll hear the call of millions
Who can never say the name,
And stand beside them
In the bleeding rain?

I do like it...especially the line about the songbird. Are you a musician? I hope you can set it to music as well. Good wishes....
Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

Yes, I have set it to some simple piano chords.
I love music, althogh I'm self taught so not very god at it, but I play piano, guitar, bass, and harmonica. I'm trying to learn violin too, lol.

I'm glad you like it. I tried really hard on this one.

That is so good! It's a marvellous work of art, never let anyone tell you otherwise!
Will it be set to music?
I would love to have a go at it!
It has that joyous yet melancholic nature to it that a lot of Prince music includes.
Let me know if you can let me set it to music and I'll give it a go! In the meantime, keep up the inspirational work 😎✌❤

Im tearing up rn. Thank you for your kind words.
I have set it to music, but I'd like to see what you do with it. It's meant to be a kind of ballad. I'd be thrilled if you set it to music.
The best of luck.

Actually, Sometimes it Snows in April is a good mark. And maybe Nothing Compares 2 U, and a bit of How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore.
