Woah guys! Most of you seemed pretty riled with this album. I would look at things differently. This album does something very different to previous Prince releases. This should not be compared to a collection of polished studio songs. Instead, this album can be seen more as a fly on the wall documentary, a snapshot of where Prince was at this time. This lets us explore numerous elements such as his creative process, his piano and vocal skills, and what was on his mind on that day, emotionally and creatively. The listener gets the excitement of peeking behind the curtain for a rawer Prince than ever before captured on record in a stream of consciousness format, which is why judging songs independently from each other doesn’t work here.

This way of taking Prince albums into new territory might not be to everybody’s taste but how much of what Prince put out ever was? Certainly, it would be disappointing if the next release were another raw piano rehearsal but this was a smart first move, focusing on Prince as an artist, setting the stage - and whetting our appetites - for what’s to come.

ps. You raise concerns about whether the highest quality version of this rehearsal really is a cassette. It seems that it probably was recorded straight to a cassette. Says Susan Rogers: “He would have me or Don or whoever was around mic the piano and the microphones, just bring it up into the console, send it straight to cassette and just hit record”.
