I've been asked to DJ a friend's wedding. As a committed Prince/funk fan, I've got the wax, but I don't know what I need exactly equipment-wise.
They are paying for everything, but I need to tell them what I need so they can rent it from a sound equipment rental service. What kind of duel-turntable, PA system, etc. should I ask for to rock out an average size community center?

I also want to play MP3s off of a laptop. Would this effect what PA system setup I should ask for?

Hmm, all :I: can do is give the fundamentals, but the hire services should be able to do the rest...

A couple of nice JBL P.A speakers would suffice,
You will definitely need a power amp but how much power also depends on the size of the room (U don't want a 13K rig in a box!).

If U are using turntables, try and get your hands on the Technics SL-1210 (Mk2 or Mk3, no matter!) as these are quite sturdy and reliable. As an alternative, the Vestax range of turntables are the nearest competitor.
This is all assuming U want 2 mix of course, otherwise a couple of Numark decks will do just the job.

If U want 2 use dual CD-decks, the Pioneer range do a very good range of CD decks with the access times (the time taking to start a CD), being almost immediate (Probably thru some buffering technology).

Failing that U can try the Denon range which are still the standard but are being eclipsed by the Pioneer range with the new TurntableCD palyer (where you can use the CD as you would a record thru a mounting plate).

All DJ mixing desks vary so there is no particular brand that :I: can suggest here apart from get one which can have two inputs for both decks, an additional output for your MP3 laptop (although U can usually switch between "Phono" and "CD" on the same channel on some desks), another additional output (just incase something else turns up!) an optional Microphone input and the all important headphone socket for monitoring (as if U needed 2 know that! )


so in a nutshell

1. P.A speakers (preferably JBL)
2. Turntables
(if turntable = "vinyl" then Technics 1210=Recommended
else
if turntable = "CD" then Pioneer CDJ-500=Recommended
3. Mixing Desk should have enough inputs to accomodate 2 decks, your laptop, a mic and headphone socket too.

LOL, nah Droop the suspension on the 1210s are a tad off.. i do like the Vestax series.. those are sweet.
