Al Bell, Bellmark Records, Stax & Prince

I have, like many, be revisiting articles about Prince since his passing. A lot of discussion has been made about how the Stax Records sound was one of his primary influences - and I can totally hear it. It makes sense as well that he picked up Mavis Stapes and when he released The Most Beautiful Girl in the World he chose small Bellmark (headed by Al Bell, former head of Stax) to handle the distribution.

I don't know if others here have had a chance to see Take Me To The River (http://takemetotheriver.livingfilm.com/), a documentary about the Memphis sound with a prominent Stax feature, but it's worth watching. Also wonderful is the Memphis Soul | In Performance at the White House. http://www.pbs.org/inperf...phis-soul/

At any rate, I was fortunate enough to perform with William Bell, a Stax legend, a few years ago. He asked me to accompany him on his duet Private Number. He was the nicest man - truly. And thank God for that, because I was NER-VOUS. I mean - it's William Bell and this was HIS song. You can see at the beginning that he just settled me right down. smile It's one of my favorite moments, ever, singing. The video was shot from the audience so it's not the best; sound is pretty good though. smile That's my band as well.

"Everything that's in your heart, come what may
Even though his might get broken" RIP Prince
