the camille project Hi everyone!
I'm designing CD packaging, a poster, and booklet for a class project and picked the Camille album as my subject. I'm new to design and Prince fan-dom, but I know a lot of you are experts in one, the other, or both so I would greatly appreciate any feedback you're willing to share.
Right now, I'm working on the CD cover, and have three drafts. They are very much works in progress (for example, I'm missing a "La" in the third concept, I think) but I need to pick ONE, or maybe combine elements from all three. Is there one design that you prefer over the others? one that feels the most Camille?
I'm using Illustrator, and welcome any tips on the software too! ( I know. I'm being greedy.)
I'm not sure if the images are too big to insert them directly in the thread so you can check everything out here:

Thank you in advance!

I love it!!! Nice job IMO your covers fit perfectly with the feel of the music of Camille.
Can't wait to see more! ...No wonder there are more ardent MJ fans... |

Very interesting project! I'd like to see your package and booklet combined with a CD edition of the whole triple album. I'd like to have a good boot physical copy of the Camille CD, like we have of Dream Factory. It's not popular to pay for bootlegs here in the .org, but I'd gladly do it if it's a good work! |

^^ Thanks for the encouragement! I'm still in the beginning phases of things and am now taking a break from the CD cover to work on the poster. (Did you have a favorite cover design btw?) The project is 100% educational--and definitely not-for-profit--since it's for a class, but I'm happy to share what I come with, assuming it's any good! |

My favourite one is the black one with the Souli-a-colia... |

Hi there,
I took graphic design and photography school and perhaps I can shed a bit of light on your project...and I'm a moderate Prince fan...
Anyway Camille was Prince's alter ego, his feminine side, his half, so in representing her you should use light tones...prefererably peach and ivory...(ther former one of prince's fave colours...in the 80's for a concert everyone had to wear black and pech to a concert!) I suggect you use either an image of Prince's eyes...or a silhouette of him...a discreetly unrecognizeable image of him....or a drawing of writing...like you did at the end of your examples...except more of a visual concept...I hope i'm not being too cryptic or obtuse with my advice...it's nice to see that you made your project on Prince....I made one of him too...it was on all his life's work:D
Oh and as for the project programs...use Illustrator for the font...Photoshop for the images...and Corell for any paintings...unless you plan on a simple drawing use Illustrator for that...Good Luck...I hope I didn't overwhelm you with info. |

Very helpful to know! I was starting to feel like that one looked too much like a teenage girl doodling , but I'll revisit it. I want the cover to look feminine but still have an edge because a lot of the songs are edgy and strong sounding. Plus, Camille is a boy... |

Thanks! Not overwhelming at all! You've given me a great idea. Hopefully, I'll actually be able to execute it. My abilities, unfortunately, don't match my ambitions--yet! I get what you're saying about using the lighter colors, and I'll give it a try. I guess initially I was leaning more towards the bright Lovesexy colors rather than the peaches/yellows/blues/blacks of SOTT, which maybe doesn't make sense temporally? I'm working on poster ideas now so it could be good time to try out some new things there... Have you posted any of your projects on the Org?
Thanks again for taking the time to write me feedback. I appreciate it! |

^ Thanks so much for checking out the link and for letting me know about the problem! I found out yesterday that the server hosting my site is down. I guess you get what you pay for, and since I'm using a free web hosting service, well...
I was planning on updating the site with my poster design in the next few days so hopefully the server will be up and running by then. If not, I'll look into another option to share my images. Thanks again. |
