American Dream
When the sun goes down And temporal cheer fades What goes on in your town Lurking in urban glades When no one else is around
Close the doors Shutter the windows Choose to ignore What's in the shadows
Even if it's on your Front step Pressing against The glass Hovering over The chimney stack Look over your shoulder It just might attack
When you're in sleep Having heavenly dreams The predator can creep Life ain't what it seems
Wolves in sheep's clothing Howl outside the garbage cans Which hide the mortgage You can no longer pay When the bill collector calls Your blood turns cold You can no longer play The game that goes on Day after day
One paycheck away From that cut-throat Existence on the street It can't happen to you Life is too sweet
That only happens to those Ne'er-do-wells who choose Not to work-- It's they who lose
Not me! Can't be One step away From losing What's left Of my American Dream...
It's too confusing How can it happen?! I ain't lax Work every day I pay my tax For this job That's slipping away... I might get a pink slip Tomorrow... Until then, I have to borrow
Banking on what's left In my account Is it worth the amount I've spent Or the cost incurred For buying in to What just might be A hustlers' scheme A bastardized joke Of my American Dream...?
