Violence involving the youth, rather as perpatrators or as victims, has been an issue here in Minneapolis.

For this session, DreamFirstBorn, Jew, i have assigned you to do a 10 minute documentary on this subject.

The research has begun.

Reading assignments include:

The Adverse Childhood Experiences Study

Results Minneapolis: Youth Violence Prevention

The Imperative for Primary Prevention

The BluePrint

once the reading is complete a synthesis must be written.

Until then,

ANDROGYNINE,

Here is my synthesis on the reading assignment

Synthesis

According the CDC (Center for Disease Control) violence is defined as, The intentional use of physical force or power, threatened or actual, against oneself, and other person, or against a group or comm. Unity that either results in or has a high likelihood of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, maldevelopment or deprivation. Each year there are approximately 50,000 people who fall victim to fatal violence in the United States. To put these statistics on scale, the population of Minneapolis would be wiped out in about 7 years or so, just by violence alone.

It is reported that the burden of violence, in dollars and cents, in the United States alone is at around 70 Billion dollars a year, as of the year 2000. At the current rate it is expected to be far greater. This information is based on loss of production and health costs that the taxpayers cover, in the U.S. The average cost of a single homicide is $1.3 million in lost revenue and $4,906 in medical costs each year.

Before it can be determined on how to prevent violence there are several things that have to be considered. Who is affected by violence, what is the cause of violence and what is the ramification of violence.

Youth violence is usually defined as violence perpetrated on someone between the ages of 10-24. Youth violence is generally caused by bulling, gang violence, and domestic violence just to name a few. The ramification of youth violence can range from medical care for nonfatal violence related injuries, mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and other psychological problems. Youth violence can cause a severe impact on the community. It can create ballooned heath care cost, low levels in productivity, decline in property values and the disruption of social services.

Some of the risk factors, according to the CDC, for youth violence includes: history of violent victimization, attention deficits, history of early aggressive behavior, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, high emotional distress, antisocial beliefs and attitudes and exposure to violence and conflict in the family, just to list off a few. Though I don’t necessary agree with all of these findings I find them quite interesting to say the least. That would mean that practically every one consider a youth in this country is at high risk for committing violence. To me that seems a little extreme.

In my documentary I want to explore what a Childs definition of violence is. I want to get a sense of what a Childs perception is of violence. I would like to get an account of the violence that child has gone through. I would like to see what brought the child to the particular organization and what changes the child has develop because of being there.

I would like to go behind the scenes and talk with the parents and relatives who live in the environment of the child and find out a little bit of their history. I want to see if I can trace how far back the issues of violence in the “family.” I would also like to discover when they realized there was an issue of violence in the family and what made them decided to have the child enroll in the organization that helps prevent youth violence.

I want to do this because in reading and looking over all the material that was provided, I realized that it was all basically numbers and statistics. They never provided any example of children who were either perpetrators or victims of youth violence. I want to get a more human experience on the subject. Where it started, what was the cause and finally what goes into the makings of an organization that dedicates its mission on helping to prevent youth violence.

ANDROGYNINE

I know what that means. Tell him.

for now, i want you to write a one page about yourself and what is your view on the documentary. What direction do you plan on the project. How do you see it.

I have set you up with an appointment with the organization you will be working with on this project.

Your contact person is Daneille. You will meet with her and the people who run the program. Be prepared to discuss with them your ideas for this documentray. You will meet the kids who will be featured in the documentary.

i want a report of that first meeting.

until then,

ANDROGYNINE,

i met with the heads of the organization you set up for me. I don't have my one page, yet, but here is my progress report from that meeting. I will write the one page once i speak with the executive producer of this project.

Progress Report:

I met with Danille, Chaka and Jordon, each one representing the 3 organizations that are working together in the mural project. We talked about what was the direction we wanted to take in this documentary. I listed off the following goals I wanted to achieve with this project:

  1. What The Main Street Project is, what are it’s goals pertaining to the mural project.
  2. How the children were selected. What the process is.
  3. What are the backgrounds of the children.
  4. How does painting the mural help the children to prevent violence.
  5. What is the message conveyed in the mural.
  6. How do the children define violence.
  7. Are the Children in violent environments, rather it be at home, in the community, at school, what have you.
  8. That the project was not a commercial for any of the organizations involved. That we wanted to capture the truth on how the program works and how it effects the children and community involved.

Other questions that I wanted to more in-depth were:

  1. How and why the facilitors got involved.
  2. Past projects. For example what are the locations of past projects.
  3. Which programs are involved in this collaboration?

They had issues with past “behind” the scenes projects and asked if they could have some input on what is in the documentary. I told them that We are interested in getting the truth behind the story and that the only person who had any input on the outcome of the documentary (final edit) was the Executive Producer: Barbara Wiener.

I told them that my main objective behind the documentary was to get into the child’s experience in violence, that this documentary was to be from their point of view. It was their voice that I was interested in telling.

I assured them that I was only interested in putting each party in the best light but that would only be possible with the truths that we discover.

They seemed very pleased with the meeting and everything was a go, with the exception that Barbara would meet with them. I would like to be at that meeting.

After our meeting we went over to the location where the children where practicing for Tuesdays beginning of the mural. There I introduced myself to each of the kids personally and asked what each of their names were. I can’t remember all of them but I will get to know them more in the coming weeks.

I shot some images and videos of the kids. I will bring them with me for class.

After meeting with them I have been thinking about it and how I would like to approach the filming of this documentary.

Up next is to meet with my team and discuss the above with them and see what their point of view is.

Sorry Break-UP, i asked DreamFirstBorn, Jew to keep this mission a secret until it was accomplished.

I challanged DreamFirstBorn, Jew with a super cool assignment. Get one image of Dave. After talking with Dave for a few minutes. Jew was allowed 5 shots. Here is one. it was taken at 11:30 last night with just about no real lighting.
