not so sure this is such, a good thing. This institutionalization. But i am here as requested. I have always enjoyed being in the background, only visiable to those who are looking. I remembered that Regina, Spencer and I were to have drinks over at Rock Bottom. It was 8:08 and i was late, as usual. I think i do that on purpose sometimes. I will admit whiskey and beer are fun, but they sure have a way of reminding me... i need to get laid.

right then the phone rang.

p.s. The night ended with Regina making off with my hat, 1/2 my stash and i was laid out on the floor unable to move. I lost the bet.

wow! last night was incredible.

i found myself going to a party. Walked through the park on my way there. The occupiers had taken it over. I stopped to chat with one of the news reporters, Channel 4 action News, he filled me in on the happenings. Fun.

i get to the house party. This was going to be way funner. When i got there everyone one was taking shots of whiskey and dancing. I was in the right place at the right time. I met several new people one in particular. I'll call him BAM!, super cute and loooooves dancing to Lady GAGA. He said he knew that look in my eyes. I told him great then there's no need to play games. Your kinda cute wanta dance? Heavy Metal Lover. Scandolus.

Later his girlfriend came up to me and said are you making a play for BAM? I said why you want to make it a threesome? She spit out her drink. LOL then said, Wow! The smile on your face, Is epic.

really? i returned to her, well how about this one? she took me by the hand and lead me to another room. kinda dark, but not black. We weren't the only ones there.

My report is on Toby Miller he is a Media Theorist, who is a professor at The University of California, Riverside. I picked him for obvious reasons.

as for my day...

when i got to the Institute this morning the front glass door was bashed in. There was tape on it to keep the glass from getting everywhere. I asked the security, "What happen?" they told me not to worry about IT... Then 12 hours later i get back to the crib and again the front glass door is kicked out. this time glass was everywhere...

who was it who said no coincidences?

over 160 emails to my account from ONE person, someone i don't even know. Not all of them NICE. Says very bad things about Prince. he calls me junior.

Toby Miller Media Theorist

Toby Miller is currently a Professor at The University of California, Riverside. Mr. Miller has also taught at Murdoch, Griffith University, The University of South Wales as well as New York University. He has written and edited over 30 books, that tackle the subjects of Sports, Media, gender, age, politics, as well as the success of Hollywood over sea and cultural policies.

Toby has appeared as a guest speaker/analyst on various panels ranging from The BBC News’s “Movie Trailers Voice Over”, The University of California Riverside’s “Studying Popular Culture” and “Global Hollywood 2010” for AFRTS Center for Screen Business and many others, just to name a few. His credentials also include writing over 100 articles dealing with Technology and Environment, Academia, Gender, Health, Media Studies, Sports and Cultural Studies.

In the article “Trovolta’s Critical Battlefield” by Tom Brook for the BBC News, Toby was quoted as saying, “Battlefield Earth will help to mainstream what Scientology looks like. It will say Scientology is also about narrative, it's about story, it's about pleasure, it can be the basis of a Hollywood action-adventure film, that it is not in fact some weird cultish phenomenon that is all about taking away children and stretching their minds into places they shouldn't go." Making theory that the film was done in order to promote the religion’s teachings more prevalent.

In another article, “End in Sight for Jackson Circus” for the BBC NEWS by Matthew Davis, when asked about the media storm surrounding Michael Jackson’s trail for sexual misconducts, Toby answered by saying that Jackson was still a very popular name around the world, but what he really represented was the eccentricities of the America, to everyone else around the world. It’s comments like this that capture the attention of the reader and though you may not agree with it, it gives you an idea of how our Celebrities are view outside of our country and how they represent the US and it’s culture to the rest of the world. As a writer Toby has a way with conveying his ideas, touching the truth, from an outsiders point of view looking in, during the craziest of events that causes media frenzies.

When he wrote in the article “Oprah’s Influence Culture of Confession” for the Press Enterprise in 2006, he acknowledges that some critics do blame Oprah for being an empty carcass of narcissism in the realm of reality programming, but then goes to say that in his opinion that Oprah has actually made the public sphere much more rewarding, because she has chosen to bring to light such neglected topics to mainstream media, such as racism, violence against women and children, sexual identity and other topics, deemed at the time, silenced by other mainstream media outlets. In doing so she has, with her activism, been able to put these subjects firmly into the public’s mind and place an agenda to helping find some sort of healing for the general population at large.

Not only does Toby take on the entertainment aspects of the media, he also takes approach at how the media, when proven in 2005 that US authorities had come to the conclusion that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, had very little fan fare by all the major news outlets, with the exception of ABC. He went on to say that because so, a whopping 44 percent of [Americans] still believe that Iraq was responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. He then sums it up by saying that this country is not a very safe place because of the “immense risks generated by local commerce and masculinity, and the failure to create citizenship codes that protect against that violence. Not to mention its imperialistic war-mongering.” It is when he wrote these words Toby became not only someone who works with the media but also someone who has the courage to speak against the media and says what a very large population of the world is thinking. While writing this, two questions come to mind: 1. Is this what the population is thinking or 2. Is the population thinking this because of what Toby and other media theorist are saying?

Like Toby there are many media theorist out there who place their thoughts and opinions out there so the public has a variety of opinions to choose from, regurgitate and the make their own. If people like Toby were not out there for people like you and I to discover how would our perception of the media be. Would we continue to be a mass population that is force-feed what the owners of the media want us to believe or is it because of theorist like Toby who add there two cents worth of though just to confuse us even more.

In doing the research on Toby Miller I came to the conclusion that he has some very good ideas in regards to the media and he is well accredit in his knowledge of the media and how it works. He doesn’t persuade my mind this way or that way, but I did enjoy finding another person out there who does have the thoughts and ideas that are somewhat similar to mines, who isn’t a part of the corporate media but still has an influence on what corporate media says and how it says it.

Stereotypes in Media Communications

Stereotypes in Media Communications are used as tools to gain mind control over the population. While reading this weeks assignment I found myself asking two questions. How was the word stereotype being used and how is media communications being defined? The answer to these question were answered within the first few pages of the article and with that more questions were asked and answered as I worked my way to the articles conclusion.

On the first page, stereotype is defined as ““fixed mental” images of a group that is frequently applied to all its members.” It continues to go on to say that as a society we are continually searching out for a way to deal with the struggles of everyday reality. To make it easier on us we tend to put things into categories. If it looks like a duck, walk like a duck and talks like a duck it must be a duck. Fuck, it’s a duck? Do we as individuals see things as ducks? I surely hope not.

I do not believe that as humans we are naturally designed to place each other in boxes, categories or groups. We are born with curiosity, which is our human nature. It is unlimited and undefined. Yet, it’s when outside influences began to implement ideas, according to their own agenda that we as humans began to take on the condition of needing to be informed of%Proxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 ideas rather than, create ideas of our own. Stereotyping is the formula created to kill the curiosity of individual minds within society.

Media communications can be interpreted as any form of transferring information to individuals in society. Newspaper, Books, Radio, Television, Internet, Skywriting and so on and so on, are these tools that are used to feed information to society. It is those who own and have power over these media outlets, telling society what to think, eat, drink, wear, dream, what to want, desire and be afraid of, they are the ones who are controlling the mind of society. The government, Madison Ave, and Hollywood, the father, the son, and the unholy ghost, if you will, who are controlling society, by creating these fixed mental images and blinding the curiosity of us, as individuals.

So in conclusion I would say that using stereotypes, those owning and having power over the media, communicates certain ideas, rather they be African-American are all uneducated, poor and savages, to women are subservient to men and even gay men are flamboyant and effeminate, ect. ect. ect., to the mass population creating a division within the members of society, by replacing the human nature of individualism and curiosity. Thus making the unsuspecting society, as a herd of sheep, following the Sheppard no matter where he leads.

The last movie i saw last night was "Compliance" by Craig Zobel. Here is the letter i sent him.

Hi Craig Zobel,

I saw your film last night Compliance and i can't believe i was the only one who walked out. In a nutshell, It reminded me of that experiment that i learned about in school, where someone with supposed authority told people to shock another person who was accused of something and each time increasing the amount of the voltage. Each person told to do so, did so, not questioning the person or the authority, going against his or her own beliefs, because of the supposed authority.

As i was watching your film i felt more and more like i was participating in the rape and dehumanization of Becky. I was allowing it to happen, by watching it, knowing how wrong everything was.

I couldn't believe that no one questioned this dude, a voice, over the phone. He was sick and twisted and the more i watched it the more i felt sick and twisted to the point i couldn't take it anymore. At a certain point i felt like this guy was now controlling me and everyone else in the theater, like the employees at the restaurant.

I felt like i was tied up in that theater gagged and bound wanting to scream this is so wrong and because of a 10 dollar (or whatever the fair was) investment into the experience of the film, i was forced to watch it to the end.

When Becky was forced to expose herself to the manager’s boyfriend i couldn't take it anymore and i left the theater. Feeling so shameful yet so empowered because i did have the right to walk away from such a travesty. Yes while watching that film i felt powerless and walking a way i felt i had gain that power back.

I know it was a film and for entertainment purposes but Compliance was also an experiment into the morality of the viewer and just howProxy-Connection: keep-alive Cache-Control: max-age=0 0much they would allow another to suffer without excreting the power to do anything to stop it. Compliance is a great commentary on the morality of everyone who takes part in its experiment.

As a filmmaker, i though you did an extremely well job with this one. You took the audience right into the situation and force them to deal with their own morality. I just wished more people walked out.
