Many lyrics, no music

How do I create a song, if I don't have any music, but a lot of lyrics...? Which instrument should I try playing on??

Please help me out here!

You might want to ask this question in the org Musician
Hangout. They discuss the hows and whys of the music they
make, and give each other suggestions.

You will need two things. Firstly learning piano/keyboards is very useful if you want to compose. And secondly you will need to learn composition or at least how to arrange chord progressions.
In a couple of hundred years historians may discover that Prince's lyrics were written by Christopher Marlowe.

Yes that's a problem that isn't it. It's in your head but no-one else can seem to hear it.

If you are hearing music in your head, but don't know how to play anything yet, then you can possibly learn how to play the melodies that you hear in your head on a keyboard/synthesizer and record it all through midi on your computer.

That is how I started out when I was 14. Find out if there are any classes in your area. I wasn't able to get into a performing arts school until I was 17, but they had electronic music classes there. Eventually I bought my own computer to be able to compose at home. Before that, my uncle had a keyboard, a REALLY cheap one and I would play around with it and record my ideas on a tape recorder. I did the same with my lyric/melody ideas. I would sing my lyrics into the tape recorder. I still have the tapes!

Eventually, when you have full songs you can try to find people to play them for you. I would suggest learning piano on the way. I have taken some lessons, as well as theory classes, which are very helpful. I also took an african drumming class, which has helped a little bit with composing rhythms. Just learn as much as you can if you really want to do this, and HAVE FUN!!!

Melodies R not found, they R created.

1. Try this...Uze the word "La". say the word "La" about 7 R 8 timez N a row at different tonez R pitchez. Like the keyz on a piano.

2. Listen 2 Ure Favorite Prince Song, Sing along with it, but uze the word "La" Nstead of saying hiz wordz 2 get a feel 4 how timing N pitch go hand N hand.

3. Uze a time piece such az a metronome, or a loud clock.

4. La along with the time piece uzing different pitches R tonez.

5. Change the La'z N2 Ure wordz.

6. Learning Piano iz essential, but until U do, This may help.

U could also learn Guitar, But piano iz a little eazier.

F U need N E help N the future, U can E-mail me at Thumpinhard@cox.net

Pick an instrument who's sound you enjoy. Marry the words to the sounds. It will come to you as did the lyrics. I believe in you and so do your friends on the org.

Collaborate.

there's TONS of collaborators out there - some of which are made up of lyricists that don't know jack about music, and musicians that don't know jack about lyrics - Elton John/Bernie Taupin, Ashford/Simpson, Simon/Garfunkel.

A lot of the org musicians have music with no lyrics, just sitting around gathering dust, you could probably work with one of them!

I agree with this method. I taught a similar method to a friend of mine and he was amazed of how it really works over time! Very good advice, Thumper!
