Moderator | Actually, I think that's what's missing in today's music.
Not exactly protest music, but just anything with meaning or soul to it. Maybe that's why music in the 60's was so great. It seems like today, most acts are just boasting of themselves. Maybe that's why Prince's Sign of the Times/Lovesexy is considered by most to be his best work because he had something to say. There deffinately seems to be lack of any message in music today. Dreamfirstborn - papercrayon - hrhsmellofjazmin made a DAMN good protest song called "I'm Alive". Boy it was astounding, a little like "Cross The Line" kind of beat 2 it, a cool break and shit. It was dope! It inspired me 2 make a protest song called "The March" where I incorporated his screaming with other screams and sounds of destruction. I never put it on my site and stuff because I dont have permission from him (although he told me that it was cool), and I would like 2 re-record the lyrics... Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

Back then the 'cool' music was music that made a social statement, and being into the hippie/peace/anti-corporation/free-spirit vibe was what it was all about. Look at Stevie, Marvin, Sly, even curtis mayfield tellin it like it is. That's what's missing now. nobody's tackling the issues or talking about the obvious problems. Greed has taken over the music industry to the point where anyone with something to say gets no airplay. (not just music, but the media too) It's time we brought it all back to being REAL, and corporation-manufactured music and news is not real! wake up peeps, we gotta stand before there's nothing left to stand on!

One of the things I like about Prince is that he stands for something (other than greed). I don't agree with everything he says, but you have to admire someone with the courage to stand for something even when it may affect them commercially. I don't think he stopped in the 80's, I mean Money Don't Matter Tonight seems relevant at the moment. In a couple of hundred years historians may discover that Prince's lyrics were written by Christopher Marlowe.
