So ANDROGYNINE is making me write a 3 scenes that lead to an inciting incident in a famous person life. I choose Prince. the inciting incident i chose is the moment he changed his name to 0(+>. We first have to set the stage and do a little research.... it's hard to do this without being subjective. so just from doing research from reading different material here is part of a 5 page paper setting the stage.
this is to include 4 main points...
His physical, social, psychological, and spiritual atributes..
this is what i have so far...
It was June 7, 1993 when Prince announced that he was changing his name to 0(+>. Among many explanations of the name change the one that stands out the most was the following. “I do what God says,” Prince would say “and he told me to change my name. It was a spiritual decision.” Many of his fans took what he said and went with it. It was shortly after he was quoted as saying: “The first step I have taken towards the ultimate goal of emancipation from the chains that bind me to Warner Bros. was to change my name from Prince to the Love Symbol. Prince is the name that my mother gave me at birth. Warner Bros. took the name, trademarked it, and used it as the main marketing tool to promote all of the music that I wrote. The company owns the name Prince and all related music marketed under Prince. I became merely a pawn used to produce more money for Warner Bros... I was born Prince and did not want to adopt another conventional name. The only acceptable replacement for my name, and my identity, was the Love Symbol, a symbol with no pronunciation, that is a representation of me and what my music is about. This symbol is present in my work over the years; it is a concept that has evolved from my frustration; it is who I am. It is my name.” – Prince.
Now not even a year before this took place, Prince had renegotiated his contract with Warner Bros. for 6 more albums and at the time was the largest deal in music history. The deal was reported to be worth 100 million dollars and Prince was also given the title Vice President of Artist and Repertoire (“A & R”) at Warner Bros. Warner Bros now had a firm grip on him. It was during this time, before the name change, that Warner Bros. dissolved Prince’s record label, Paisley Park Records, which they viewed as a vanity label and wasn’t bringing in the revenue they wanted. Along with shutting down Paisley Park Records, Warner Bros. also would not let Prince release the new music at the rate Prince was recording and they refused to sell him back the master recordings of his previous music recordings. This caused the relationship between Prince and Warner Bros. to sour. No less than a year from the release of his last album titled During this time socially, Prince was at the second peek in his career. He was coming of the release of 3 consecutive hit albums, being The Batman Soundtrack, Diamonds and Pearls, followed by The Love Symbol album. Critics, fans, and his peers viewed him as the one of the most in influential artists of all time. He was called the Mozart of our time. He was selling out large venues in both America and Europe. Not only was he consider a great artist but he was also consider a smart businessman. Though he only had a high school education, Prince had the smarts to surround himself with the best people in their field, the best lawyers, managers and so on. But with the name change came a new mentality. He got rid of his managers and hired new lawyers. He began to start doing interviews with magazines and news outlets, which is something that he rarely did before hand. He was beginning to step out of the mystery He had created for himself in the past and was beginning to go one on one with the outlets he has shunned before. He was taking his fight with Warner Bros. to the streets for back up. The newly named 0(+> was now doing concerts only consisting of unreleased songs from The Gold Experience and was getting his fans to petitions Warner Bros. to free The Gold Experience. Warner Bros. wasn’t having it and the battle between the two escalated.
The psychological reasoning behind all of this is still up for speculations. Many people outside of his hard core fan base, during this time, didn’t understand what 0(+> was thinking or doing and was quick to write him off as being weird, eccentric, completely crazy and out of touch. Most felt that he was making a mockery of slavery, considering he was one of the highest paid entertainers of the time and they didn’t understand how his suffering could be related to the suffering of the slaves forced to come from African to America. Why would he change is name to a symbol that was unpronounceable? Considering the large collection of hit records he had, why would he do concerts and only play music that no one had herd before? And most of all why in the world would he write the word “SLAVE” on his face and wear it everywhere he went. With these antics his creditability was beginning to fade and people were quick to write him off as being done with. He soon became the blunt of every joke. No one was really taking serious anymore. Most didn’t dig any deeper than what the media was saying about him. But one thing for sure in regards to his music, he had reached a new inspiration. The music was unstoppable and on fire. It was during this time that radio station stop playing his music, which made it harder for him to get the music out there. But this did not stop him; in fact it made him work even harder to get his point across. His point being that, the record companies were treating the artist as slaves by owning their master recordings, images, names and copyrights.

ANDROGYNINE here is a ruff draft of the 3 scenes that lead to the inciting incident, which is the name change. I know this is not the actual way it happen but you said that the only thing that had to be fact was the inciting incident. Since we don't know exactly what happen, I am using my imagination based on the little bit of information that i researched... here goes..
Scene One
This scene opens up to a beautiful, beautiful girl sitting at the front desk at the entrance of Paisley Park Studios. The song Dolphin is playing. The girl has long brownish black hair, with bangs cropped across the front of her face, just above her eye brows. Her eyes are a deep rich chocolate brown. Her lips are perfectly shaped and painted with a rose colored lipstick. The phone rings and she answers it. “Thank you for calling Paisley Park, how can I help you?” she says. A Fed Ex truck pulls up to the entrance of the building. The driver grabs a package and gets out of the truck and enters the building, walking towards the front desk. The girl still speaking to the caller on the phone says, “Angelon did you say? I’m sorry but he doesn’t take messages at this time.” She is interrupted and pauses, then continues.. “Yes Mr. Loan, I am sure it is important but like I said he is not taking messages at this time… Ok I’ll do that.” She finishes with a smirk then hangs up the phone, just as the Fed Ex guy places two packages on the desk. One is a medium size box and the other is an envelope. She smiles at the delivery guy and says “how are you doing today Jimmy?” as she looks up at his name tag which reads “six” and opens the medium size box and pulls out its contents. An 8 x 10 portfolio. Jimmy answers, “not as fine as you.” She responds to him, “you need to stop,” as she pauses for a moment as she looks through the pictures. She continues to say, “Nice…. Wardrobe sketches.” The scene cuts to a room. Studio A. it opens up on the feet of someone wearing spotless white boots with the bottom of the soles slightly worn in, with 3 inch spiked heels. They are lying flat on the floor facing straight up. The camera pans up the legs, which are also draped in a perfectly clean white-pleated slacks, made of a fine fabric. The camera cuts to a tape recorder, a fostex, that is spinning in circles as the tape comes to an end. The song “dolphin” ends. The tape flaps as it continues spinning. The camera pulls back revealing a glass window that seperates the vocal booth and the control room. As the camera comes to a stop it reveals in the reflection of the glass that the person lying on the floor, unconsciously passed out , has a black scarf wrapped around his face, with a purple guitar next to him. Then scene then returns to the girl. She has opend the smaller envelope saying outloud, “Warner Bros.” she reads the letter… The Fed Ex guy is getting into the truck and then drives off. There is a concern look on the girls face as she says, “oh no, they are shutting down the label and they refuse to release the gold.” Scene Two
Prince wakes up. He is in his bed, to his surprise. The lights are warm, with the brightest light in the room being a beam of light that is coming through a break in the dark thick drapes that are almost closed together. He looks around the room. He see’s his cloths are neatly lying across a chair in the corner of his room. The source of the warm lights are coming from the vanity in his room. It is covered with assorted foundations and other types of make up. There is a knock at the door. There is a slight pause and the doors opens. It is a beautiful young black girl. She walks into the room. She is holding a tape cassette. She says to him, as she walks over to the stereo unit on the wall facing the bed, “we finished the course… it just needs the verses….” He looks at her but doesn’t respond. She puts the tape in the player and presses play. The music begins. She then walks over to the bed and sits next to him with her back to him. She waits for him to say something, he doesn’t. Finally she turns to him and at the same time he turns away from her. They are not facing each other. She has tears in her eyes and holding back from crying, she says to him, “The most important person in my life was killed and taken away from me….. to this day I still hurt because of it….. why would you do that to me…. Again?” She waits for an answer. She doesn’t get one. Prince is focused in on the music. She gets up from the bed, wipes her eyes and with her back to him she says, “I can’t be apart of this.” She walks towards the door. The chours of the song begins..
Get it, get it, get it, get it”
Prince rolls over and calls out her name, “Nona?” She stops just as she reaches the door. She doesn’t turn around. While being taking by the song Prince asks, “Who’s vocals are those?” puzzled. A tear falls down Nona’s face, she responds to him, “Mayte.” She then exits the room. Prince sits up.
Scene Three
Opens as a young assistant enters into a boardroom at Warner Bros. There is a meeting already in progress. She walks over to the man at the center of the table. There are 12 people sitting around the large table and there is one seat empty. She gets to the man and whispers something in his ear. The man says out loud, “well its about fucking time!” he is angry. She puts a piece of paper in front of him on the table and says to the man, “Sir I think you should read this, it just came in over the fax.” Just then Prince enters the room. He is also dressed in a black suit. He jpauses for a moment as there is a gasp in the room. The man in charge pushes the paper aside and says to Prince, “ I am glad that you could make it.” Prince doesn’t say anything. He walks around the table the long way to his seat. He does this on purpose as he wants everyone to notice what is written on the right side of his face. “SLAVE” Everyone looks at him as he sits down. No one says a word. The man looks at him in disbelief then waves the assisted out of the room. The camera follows her as she exits the room. The man is herd saying, “ok now on to the first order of business at hand.” The girl closes the door behind her the camera pans up to a television monitor in the large office room. On the T.V. is a reporter from Entertainment Tonight saying, “In strange news today Prince has announced that he nolonger is using the name he is known for an is changing it to an unpronounceable symbol.” is here |

I used the Celtix screen writing program. so the format looks a bit different than how it is posted here. I also change scene 2 and took out some of the dialog between NONA and Prince. For the 3rd scene i changed the beginning to were it starts of as soon as the young assistant puts the fax down in front of the CEO. this is just a rough draft.
p.s. I am excited about going home to NYC for christmas!!!!
