You Never (Dear Mom)

So here is a link to a song I wrote a few years ago while resolving some stuff with my mother. It was some long and deep seeded stuff. My mom didn't get it at first, and found it a put off. But ultimately, it's about resolution at the end, not a piss-on song.

It's from a CD I put together, Twisted a few years ago. I wrote it in about 2 months, and had it pretty much completed, except for some guitar solos needed (I don't play guitar, and my solo source bailed on me since).

Thoughts are appreciated.

This is a very good song. I feel that most people feel this at times about parents. I like the music. U seem to be a very talented person one that has many skills. Thanks for sharing.

I think she did get the drift of it. I hate having to explain my songs, but I did break this down for her, and told her it's a snapshot from the past, and a purging of stuff I've kept stuffed down. I went back and added the "stop all the fighting, stop all the yelling, stop all the stress and strife, and I'll just be me" to add a bit of resolution at the end of it. I always remember Prince saying it's okay to convey anger in a song, but you have to resolve it in some way. MJ said the same thing about "This Place Hotel" being an eerie song, but he resolved it and brought the listener back to their safe reality with the strings at the end. I didn't want the song to end on a bad note. It's the next to the last song on the album, and the last song is called "I Feel All the Love". I had to somehow bring it into that.

I think your song is very good. I like the music and the lyrics from your heart. I'm going to give it another listen.

Good tune. The guitar reminded me a little of Dickey Betts (who's a great player btw). I think every son goes thru this phase with his mother at one point.

Very well put. Good song.

There's some heavy stuff in those lyrics! I find the vocal delivery very relaxed though, which is a strange contrast. Have you thought about cutting one with the lyrics spoken, instead? (not like rap, but more like Leonard Cohen?) I think it would be worth a try, just to see what happens. smile

When I wrote the song, they just came out the way they did. Lyrics, and delivery. I didn't want it to be a shouty song. I have one of those. The spoken word thing is interesting, but I'm kind of done with the song, in that I've recorded it, gotten a response from my mother, and moved past it. It'll have to stay the way it is, I suppose.

Yeah, it's not an overall feeling, as my mom thought it was. It's just a picture of moments in the (now) 42 years I've been alive. We get along fine now, but there were obviously some rough spots, with her as a single parent, right when I hit 12 years old (my brother was 6), and my dad left.

Thanks. It really is about a resolution, not an ongoing strife. It was later after I wrote and recorded it that I went back and put "stop all the fighting" stuff at the end. I remember Prince or MJ saying once that anger was fine in a song, but you had to resolve it by the end. I didn't want to leave the song on a negative note.
