I've been playing on the piano for about a month now, I'm getting pretty good and now that I'm taking classes and am privy to the school pianos that are free and open anytime I get more time to practice and play the music I like to play, although I still am not sure yet if I'm ready to play in a band, I can sight read pretty well and have a basic understanding of stuff but I'm lousy at improvisation(I want to play in latin-funky jazz fusion) and still susceptible to fucking up the notes in a composition. Do you think I'm ready to play in a jazz band? or will I be embarrassed if I try and should just keep honing my technique?

Of course you are. Find some mates and start jamming. Don't worry about messing up - everyone does. But jamming with others is the best and fastest way to get better. Ask questions, and try to play with musicians that are better than you and can show you things. That's what Prince did with Sonny T., so you know it works.
