Treehouse // a Prince-driven Magic Carpet Ride -
Dear Prince Community: I'm writing to announce the release of an iPhone App project recently completed after two years in the making. Technically, 14-years in the making -- and I'm very excited to share this with the general Ecnirp community, especially those who have been hook'd for over 20 years. This is a love story between a boy and a girl who are separated by distance and have recently learned of this thing called the Internet. The story, which takes place in 1996, is told through a series of real-life e-mails exchanged between two people who are both Prince fans. A subtle Prince aesthetic is therefore peppered throughout the story and in many ways, drives the story forward. The story is told through four Appisodes™ -- the first being Free, the others are 99¢ available on the Apple iTunes App Store. Within one of the Appisodes is a lengthy open letter once written to the "Children of the Sun". The letter was originally drafted on a typewriter and sent out on purple paper to several hundred Prince fans who had their contact information published in the back of Uptown Magazine and Controversy Magazine. The open letter is reprinted within the Treehouse story as part of the e-mails exchange between the two lovers. I'd love to hear if any of you had ever received this letter in the past and are connected to this project in anyway. The project as a whole is dedicated to The Children of the Sun. TREEHOUSE is a new storytelling model merging voyeurism, found e-mails, romance, and a serial approach (dubbed, Appisodic™) all wrapped in a dynamic, new e-mail reader interface. Intriguing, right? Strange? Definitely. It’s not a game, and it’s not a book...and that’s what’s cool about the iPhone, we can make things that don’t fit into defined categories; it's a New Storytelling Machine and TREEHOUSE is a new experience in storytelling. FROM THE TREEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE (Available below for download): < TREEHOUSE is a collaboration between myself and my production/publishing partner, Jason Franzen, the designer and creative force behind First Fifteen. About a year ago, I discovered the raw e-mails that are at the heart of this project (while restoring a trashed hard-drive...). For over a year, I compiled and edited the data for Jason to design the data into a series of innovative Apps. We hope you will check out the project, we’re quite proud of it.
