Org sax players thread!! I can't be the only one!
I play alto with a fluctating line up on a semi pro basis. My main influences are Bird, Cannonball, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Coltrane but I listen to all sorts of stuff not strictly jazz. I don't play many standards I'm more a 'Jazz Classics' kinda guy so org saxophonists this is your thread! if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

I played sax in middle and high school, but wouldnt say I'm a sax player by any means. My boyfriend is a musician and he is the sax/lead singer . He is recorded and has been on the bill w/ the likes of Bonnie Raitt, Robert Cray, Carlos Santana, and Mickey Hart (who acted like an ass when we met him, yet people claim is a nice guy- I would like to be able to say maybe he just had a bad day for any of you Greatful Dead fans out there, but his actions and few choice words were proof enough to us that he is just an ass).
Anyway, he admires Dexter Gordon, Ornette Coleman, Big Jay McNeely, Pharoh Sanders, Sonny Rollins, Grady Gaines (played behind Little Richard), Maceo, and, of course, Coltrane, to name a few. There are lots of great horn players out there who play behind people and tear the sh.. out of a solo or song.

I bought a used yamaha alto a few years ago and was teaching myself some stuff,
but kinda forgot about it. Lately I've been thinking I should dig it up and start again. My ultimate goal is to sound something like Stan Getz and impress my family. Maybe some lessons are in order.

I've played the soprano & alto saxphone for 30 years... and the flute, bass & alto. Since then I've taken up acoustic guitar (a decade ago) I really don't play my alto sax that much, I still play the soprano sax and flute in church.
