How to respond critically to the posts in this forum...(you're response is required)

I've seen a number of people post their art/music/poetry in this forum, and all too often they either get no response at all, or they just get a few short words (however, there are some who go beyond these confines, and I'm personally grateful that they do); I also know the feeling of frustration that comes from posting art that is significant to me, only to be met with the sound of cricket's chirping. It occurs to me that one of the reasons for this may be because people don't know how to respond critically to other's artwork.

One of my classes this semester is Humanities, and one of our in-class assignments was to evaluate a collage and/or a poem that was handed out, and along with either work came some guidelines for practicing critical evaluation. I'd like to share them with the org, in the hopes that this will become a valuable tool for those who would like to know how:

Practicing Critical Evaluation:

1. Don't jump to any conclusions! (Put aside instinctive, emotional responses and forget how the piece relates only to you.)

2. Describe the work of art as clearly and objectively as possible. (Identify the work, its pertinent elements., etc.)

3. Look at the poet/artist's craft and offer an informed opinion. (Analyze and evaluate the piece in its proper context.)

4. Offer your own assessment of the work of art: does it hold any personal value for you? Is it relevant to us today?

I agree with you; I have feather of not dominating English better to explain to you the sense of the filmings collected in aprés SS (serafim saudade); but I can say that to the date still nobody had asked because the existence of this group of collected clips and reason this colectanea; if you want to ask I later try to explain; I have taste in doing: thank you for your intervention; it is very pertinent

Eaglebear, thank you so much for that post. It needed to be said. clapping I haven't been in this forum as much as I used to, but will visit it more often now and check out the work of the artists/poets on this forum and give my input.

you don't "score" art, in my opinion.

there shouldn't be any grade given, there should be open and honest discourse between artist and audience

This forum was founded to give constructive feedback to original creative works. I think your suggestion fits well...

Is it the only way? not at all

The way I see it is simple, without much grey areas.

If someone takes the time to try to help you get better with your art, that's a gift from human being to human being. People come here from all over the world at various level of ability and skill.

If you think you no more than them or somehow are above them in art, whofarted
at least repsect the gift of their time, take it with a grain of salt and move on.

Just have respect and you will get respect.
Don't have respect and you will get no respect.

And the doubt about the originality where is? where is the artistic creation: in the understanding of the work or in her representation? we can just dominate well the instruments and being a terrible artist.... but the respect for the human condition has to be horizontal and common to all: spectator or creator.
in my opinion, it is not just treated of lost time; we can always be therapists or artists, or art as therapy: the problem continues to be the artists' navel; worse: the critics' navel; the best is be always cordial, and above all humble: if it doesn't interest you a theme, it ignores; but if you put him in cause, you have to be humble, same if the position seems superiority being...the problem continues to be the virtuosity, and the narcissism of the ones that does and they forget three fundamental subjects: to do for who? for something and reason? the art should not just be aesthetics.... she was always in first place politics!!!forget the navel friends and we can continue to speak, same not dominating the instruments, be them the language, the strings or the blow.... good night! be happy

Well, no one is going to force you to offer a pre-thought-out point of view - I just wanted to make that option available for those who may have wanted to comment but didn't know how.

wha????? I see your point, but I don't see your point. Artists in this community are not posting their material to hear themselves talk or see themselves create. Just like a flower, an artist needs watering and nurturing - ignoring a idea is as bad as killing it sometimes.

Not true...
Shakespeare said it best
To thine own self be true...
thats why I don't really feel the need to showcase my work here sometimes
Because I'm honestly not going to listen to any criticisms a person has to make on my art. Unless it's on a production type of thing.

Not so fast - how am I to appreciate the gift of someone's time who bases their opinion on reaction, not response - a hint - the former implies an impulse (and is not really even enough to be considered a Dionysian response), and the latter implies that they've thought before they have spoken. Using the criteria that I posted makes it so you HAVE to give an informed opinion - and so that others will be able to tell whether or not you've done your homework beforehand. Sorry, but if you like to just write knee-jerk reactions, then the iTunes reviews boards are the place for you, but do we really need that here?

On the one hand, I think this is counter-intuitive - not the being true to yourself part, but the not posting any work here cuz you don't listen to criticism - Prince and other artists can manage to avoid reviews because they have achieved the appropriate status - we mere mortals, however, need to have people tell us things they feel about our work - some choose to do this in a constructive way, others, well...

On the one hand, I posted these guidelines here for artists just like you and me - I want to shift the focus away from the snap judgments and reactions, and move it towards discussion about production aspects. I want to take the game to a new level, in other words. And I think if there were more people interested in asking about the production aspects, then maybe you might share your work with us after all.
