When you write a song...

What structure do you find yourself going to?

Verse, Chorus, Verse

Intro, Verse, Verse, Bridge, Solo, Chorus, Verse

Verse, Verse, Verse (third verse is a solo)

I just ask because I'm trying to work on having more structure, more hooks and making my songs more musically sound.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I don't think about it. I just write a melody, then write one after it and so on.

So you follow no structure? Not intro's or outros? No bridges? No solos over a chord progression?

Your just writing a melody that goes into another to create changes in the song? How many different to a song?

Strophic patterns seem to be as old as music itself so maybe we're all doing it at some level whether we realize it or not. :

You are right when you say "We are doing it at some level." The subconscious mind has a big role to play in making music. I don't think at all about verses, choruses, etc... when writing a melody but it does come together. A lot of times after a night of sleep I'll know just what to do and it will work out so nice.

One great tip I learned very early on...

Give your subconscious mind guidelines to work with. Make it meet deadlines. Say to yourself: "Ok by Sunday night I will have the entire melody finished. By Tuesday night I will have all of the arrangements finished. By Thursday night I will have all the lyrics finished" ...etc...

It absolutely works.
