Usually, people employ their imaginations to decide the best way to fit into the world---and that’s it. They don’t suppose they can go any further. In the world, you’ve got your problem solvers and your entrepreneurs and your conformists. Imagination usually is used to work one of those angles. But of course, imagination is what can take you into far newer and more exciting waters. These days, an extraordinary number of otherwise intelligent people connect that possibility to a notion about “universe.” What do they mean by that word? It’s hard to say. It’s fairly vague. Universe. The sum total of the galaxies and stars and planets? The space in which these are contained? No, it seems to be more than that. For them, universe means some kind of guiding force that produces good outcomes. It’s sort of an impersonal version of God. And it “hovers” over and above imagination like a wand that “allows” imagination to operate in “positive” ways. In other words (and this is really strange), imagination and creative power are free aspects of the free individual, but that freedom is shaped and funneled by “the great one,” the universe. The universe is like a mommy or daddy who sanctions how and where imagination operates. People need this concept as permission to create. And if things don’t turn out well in some enterprise, the person can say, “It wasn’t meant to be. The universe has something better in mind for me…” Well, there is no permission. You TAKE your creative force and use it, express it. The hook and the kicker in any spiritual scheme is the connection forged to some Ultimate Concept. “We are all created free and equal.” Really? Created by whom? You mean we’re completely liberated but we owe a debt to Big Daddy Universe? That’s a con, and it’s floated, in one form or another, time and time again, like the old bait and switch. “You have this wonderful freedom to create anything you want to…but remember where it all comes from. That’s who you owe the debt to. That’s the force that guides you. And by the way, let me describe this force, so you’ll understand what kind of creating He favors. Then you can fit in at the cosmic level…” What looked like real freedom just became very, very conditional and now, once again, it’s about fitting in. Baloney. Freedom is a lot more than that. A lot more. The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating. The proof of freedom is in the creating you launch from freedom. If you need a definition for universe, YOU ARE UNIVERSE.
