The Humanity in Me

I can feel my soul cry in a whisper,
as I awake each morning to my comfortable life,
wondering what will this day claim?
I say to myself, "think positive thoughts,"
but I know in the back of my mind,
there’s a reality that cannot be ignored.

I know today there will be another
homeless family with nowhere to live,
A starving baby will cry because his
mother has no food to give.

The day will claim a new cancer victim
within its grasps, and a single, pregnant
mother with an uncertain future,
while thousands of babies lay stricken with AIDS
across the world.

Once again, another natural disaster has
made it’s mark, proving that Mother Nature still
reigns supreme among us, as victims of her wrath
work tirelessly, to put their lives back together.

Today, I know many women will fall victim to domestic violence,
and children will be abused by the uncontrolled anger of some.
Mothers will cry for the youth dying in the streets
at the hands of their brethren, over territory neither owns.

And I ask myself, what has happened to humanity?
Where is love and compassion? When did the world allow
selfishness and evil to rule, while we go about our daily lives
comfortably, as others fall victim to reality’s despair?

As the tears roll slowly down my face,
I stop and think about the reality of this moment,
and I pray, that I will never,
lose touch with the humanity in me.

Nice poem 2elijah.
As we live our lives the words in your poem resonate louder and louder.
So many people are left overwhelmed with what to do,as far as helping.
Thankfully a large number do what they can.
And as your words suggest,we should never lose our touch with humanity.

.peace.

Tony, as usual, I truly appreciate your compliments and kind words.

I actually edited this poem. Just a few changes, but pretty much sends the same message.

Thank you, Yes, the dark part of the poem, reflects the sad and ugly side of reality we know exists, as we go about our daily lives. Also, giving us a chance to take a moment to count our own blessings and be thankful we are not in those situations. But yet at the same time, we must be aware that despair does exists and know that we can go beyond ourselves and help or save some, but unfortunately, we know we cannot save everyone in these types of situations. Sometimes it takes the actions of the individuals in despair to take the first step in helping themselves and the rest will follow. Being aware of the dark/sad side of reality often opens up the human part of our souls. Thanks again.

Words of everyday reality, for sure.

Most importantly

As the tears roll slowly down my face,
I stop and think about the reality of this moment,
and I pray, that I will never,
lose touch with the humanity in me.

You're soul feels deeply and these words reflect that well. Thanks for sharing.

I'd challenge you with this as a sister piece to this by saying;

While it's easy to go to this place when the dark is darkest, let's see if you can flip the script. It's there but it takes more work to find it in everyday life.
