CAN WE MUSICIANS CRITIQUE OTHER MUSICIANS MATERIAL WITHOUT BIAS? Is this a possiblity? Can we as artist and musicians truly give a thorough critique of another musician/artist material without showing "personal artistic bias"? I have to admit that anytime someone with a demo CD places it in my hand to listen to, I have to struggle to keep my own artistic bias out of my evaluation of their material. But I tell you it is hella hard to evaluate as just a plain old ordinary "listener" without wondering what I personally would have done with the lyrics, beat or melody. And this is why I sometimes hate to put material up in this forum because sometimes I feel that I can't get a genuine critique from a fellow musician. Sound wierd?

I can relate. But as my history teacher said, "There is no such thing as objective history." It would be the same with music, art, writing, etc." This is the very nature of perspective, which is ultimately at work, I think. And for the record, if I were reviewing something you posted here, I would only tell you what I liked, and then ask you questions about what I didn't understand or didn't relate to, if that makes sense.
I personally would like to see this forum be a forum where people can post their work here, but also get people to ask questions about what inspired them to create it, or offer fun challenges, the goal being that we all learn and grow and get to know the person behind the creation. jojofran said: Is this a possiblity? Hmmm. Interesting. I just think it can be unavoidable since it is in our nature to create, toy with and manipulate sound. I mean I can free myself a little more when it comes to some artist or band that has "made it" because ultimately I subconciously feel that if they are signed to a deal or label then there must be a reason or demand for their material. I don't know. Maybe it's just me. Kind of interested what others think here.

I think so...
But we should make an effort to listen without bias or ego... Because one can never know where these connections might take us.. Y'know?

There is a demand. But I think more and more, unless you're an established artist, the demand has a more direct relationship to how many dollar signs the suits see in their eyes. Otherwise, how would you explain why someone like Britney Spears has the kind of success she does. She's not a great singer at all (her voice gets on my nerves more than anything) and she doesn't really have a lot of technical or studio wizardry goin' for her (the magic of autotune is). Her appeal is in men's groins and teen girls hearts, lets face it. And I'm not doggin' her, just speaking some truth.
