Sista, I remember you when you had a compassionate soul
and your feet planted on the ground, ready
to take that first step at the bottom of life’s stairs,
leading towards the top of the ladder of success.
I had hoped when you reached the top, that you would not
lose ground of who you truly are.

Often on our way up the ladder of success, we trip
and subsconsciously our egos persuade our inner being,
to portray an attitude filled with snobbery and swank,
putting to rest the memory of the individual
who humbly started at the first step of life’s stairs

So now you’ve earned that special paper that validates your
accomplishments and would make any parent proud, but sista,
it does not define who "you" are.
Neither will materialism, titles, education, social circles,
brand names or money, although some of the latter may satisfy your ego
and make a good impression to others, but does it really define the
person we call “you?”—your spirit, your character?

On your way up the ladder to success, did you share
with others how to get there? Did you share that wealth of
knowledge with another or were you simply in a monopoly state of mind
and kept that wealth of knowledge to yourself--afraid your
brethren may go beyond your achievements?

What’s the matter? Did I wake up your conscience and shoved your ego over?
Because when you teach one, they teach one and we all grow and so does one's spirit
So tell me, how can one call themselves successful based solely on a piece of paper,
name dropping of friends with titles and owning some brand names?

Wake up my sista....the struggle is NOT over yet.
