Getting the linn sound live

How to do it. Obviously an electric drum kit would be required but where to go from there. I suppose from there you'd have to plug that up to a drum machine with a linn drum sound on it (does such a thing exist?). And maybe have two snares hooked up to it, one for reagular snare and one for the "KAH" sound?? Or maybe I'm totally wrong.

Use a midi-capable drum machine to trigger a sampler that has all your Linn sounds loaded in. You don't need the linn drum machine. Do a google search for Linn Wav Files.

Like an electric drum kit into a drum machine that has linn samples on it? Is it possible to download linn sample (or any other kind of sample for that matter) onto a drum machine such as this? Or would I need something else? And how could I set it up so I could get a regular snare and that trademark KAH sound?

as far as I know, most drum machines don't let you load samples. I looked for one for years..

You would need an AKAI MPC ____ thing and they are really expensive. i think there is a stripped down version, but still almost $1k (haven't looked lately).

THere are many Linn snare sounds, depending on how the snare is tuned. The "kah" sound I think you are referring to (like the sound in Let's Go Crazy?) is a sidestick detuned.

I think. It's also prominent in the computer blue intro

So I'm screwed on the linn thing then?

yeah i think it's in computer blue too, with more delay or reverb on it.

You're not necessarily screwed...what is it you want to do?

YOu can always buy an AKAI MPC, the cheapest one the make and use that. I'm assuming you can hook up trigger pads to it but I don't own one.

If you have a keyboard workstation you might be able to program in a beat with them. I actually bought a Motif 6 specifically because it had smapling capabilities, My idea was to load the Linn samples in and then use the keyboard's ability to play drum patterns to create a Prince drumbeat. I still haven't done it yet though after like 3 years!

I actually have a Linndrum not LM-1 but LM-2 which I bought which is in the original box and manual. THe sanre is different but I think you can detune the sidestick to get that same "kah" effect.

I might sell it.

Couldn't you just have the kit hooked up to regular sampler with linn samples in it?

Plus, I heard a live version of Darling Nikki and during the intro and chorus parts, Bobby Z has a very loud, spacious, wide sounding snare, and then during the verses. it was just a regular sounding snare. How did he get both? Or how was he able to switch them on the fly like that? Also he was using lots of different snare sounds from song to song. How is he doing that, especially considering Prince usually sgues directly from one song to the next?

Okay I got ya. So the expensive $1k is the only one out there that you can load samples into? It seems like being able to load samples would be pretty standard on all of them....

Not really. Most drum machines don't use samples as much as other tone generation devices, the ones going for less than $600 are pretty much whatever they got, you get.

Bobby Z probably triggered the Linn's snares with two different pads, one for the big fat snare, and one for the regular snare. Or he's playing along with the drum machine.

Another option would be to buy the cheapo drum machine (Alesis SR16 or whatever) and a keyboard that has a built-in sampler. But really, just a laptop with a midi interface would be all you'd need. I used to use Fruity Loops to program Linn-sampled drum beats.

yeah but i think he wants to "play" them live. i still ahven't figured out how to map specific sounds to specific keys on my Motif (actually i still haven't loaded any samples!))

I think Bobby would only be able to trigger 1 snare at a time unless he had more than one Linn LM1's because whatever the snare is tuned to, that's what it is.
