This is dedicated to my 4th grade teacher who told me, in so many words that those of a "darker hue" could never be more than they are because their ancestors were slaves… but of course... "I" begged to differ..how could I not? It's too bad that teacher never knew how "very" wrong and ignorant she was.....


Imagine how the hue
of one’s skin can be so hated
by so many in the world
just for the innocence of
their existence, yet deserving
of their freedom and space in the world.
Surviving by the strength of their spirits
they continue to leap boundaries

Sadly, we live within a world
of many cold hearts and bodies with
souls akin to empty shells,
not welcoming of compassion,
and lack of patience and willingness
to learn and embrace the differences
and similarities of humans
outside of themselves

Allowing fear of the unknown
to justify their wrongs
instead of what is actually
right, while remaining blind
and accepting blankets of false truths
and fears, as a comfort to their realities

The egos of perpetrators
of racial prejudice refuse to see
beyond their own insecurities
and express words of hate
and insults, as though
their words of malice and venom
will somehow allow them to become
a being on a higher plane.
Little does he or she realize that they
are no more above or beyond
those human beings in which they
spew their hatred.

No golden wings or
status of King or Queen
will be granted to you, no oceans or
rivers will divide just for you
to walk through, no castles
will be built in your name,
no sun will stop rising, the world
will not come to a complete stop
and bow to you, nor will your words of scorn
part the seas because of your false truths,
fears or hatred

But what I can guarantee
is that you will breathe air, cry,
smile, feel joy, pain, illness,
grieve, worry, sigh and laugh...
just like your brethren of a darker hue.
