I want to sell my music

Im a virgin to such matters. Three things id like to know :

1) Ideally id like to be able to upload my songs somewhere and sell them. But acording to CDBaby most people arent interested in buying mp3s, although i dont see why that should be. Whats the best way, CDs or mp3? And which is the best place to go? I know that CDBaby is very popular, but i find it strange that i should have to make 5 CDs of my music and send them off, and then make more. I would have thought it was possible to upload the music and pictures and text, and then they put it together, physically create it to order, then deduct the cost, if that makes sense. And what all this about a barcode? It just seems like theres so much to spend money and effort on.

2) Is it reasonable to expect to make a respectable amount of money from this (im not expecting millions, i know) or is it generally hard to do? I know "it depends", but id like to get a realistic idea from independent musicians who are selling their music.

3) Any other info about this. Having looked around, i find the whole thing very complicated, and apparently costly.
