Why so much emphasis on the "wow" factor?

Why does there seem to be so much emphasis on the "wow" factor of a song? A song today seems to have to have some hook or other irresistible quality to it. While I understand that it's important to have some part of the song that will draw people in, and I understand that the music business is more business than music, I just wonder how much longer it'll be before enough people stand up and say to the music execs, "this must stop."

Take the song "Beautiful Girls" by Sean Kingston. Not since "Summer Girls" by LFO has a song irritated me so much. But it's got a hook that creeps into your brain, whether or not you want it there, and you end up hating the song. Do the music biz execs really believe this is the way to win friends and influence people?

Your thoughts, ppl?

WOW factor sells.

It's a term that came from Record execs who as a joke in a record company boardroom, wrote "W"'s on their butt cheeks, defecated and said "There's the next hit" evillol

'dre
Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!
