Can anyone hear recommend a decent but cheap drum machine?

No, i'm not looking for a Linn, but something to exercise my rhythmic thoughts. i was checking out the Yamaha DD-65, that seemed pretty interesting and the Zoom Streetbox, which seems like a machine designed for hip-hoppers, though a lot of folks raved about it in reviews. The Streetbox seems like a one trick pony with the 808 and 909 voices, where as the Yamaha seemed like a could do a lot more with it.

i'm really just looking for a simple versatile machine that'll be able to stretch out as i get better with programming and one i won't outgrow right away.

Any thoughts?

The Zoom 234 (or 123? I forget) is cheap and decent. The interface is a little confusing at first but the sounds are good, decent enough.

why not save your money and just get something like leafdrums for the pc?
If its standalone you're really looking for, I had a boss DR5 and dr660 for years and they are very good

DR770 boss/roland. The most bang 4 the buck.

Always liked the SR-16 as a standalone machine.
Great at both ends of the spectrum, entry level and pro.
This maching was probably overused in the early-mid 90's but I guess there's a reason behind everything!

Tried many flavours - but sooner or later, always go back to the Purple Kool-aid!

I just saw it. I thought the poster was talking about the real drum kit. The ion is like the drums but with pads and a stand n stuff...cheap but hopefully will give me the chops I need.

I realize you're looking for something simple, but I've found that the program REASON is dope for making beats, and it has a ton of sounds on it. A good laptop and this program make for fun times, and it's pretty simple to use.
