Translation of my cd "Karyokinesis" review THE ARTIST IS AUTHOR AND PERFORMER OF MUSICAL EXCERPTS OF AN ALBUM
THE KARYOKINES BECOMES MUSIC Alternative sounds composed by Katia Garofalo CHATILLON The music of the composer Katia Garofalo from Chatillon is alternative music both because it moves away from the one loved by most of people and for the philosophy that animates it. "I think that Art means freedom by schemes and fashions imposed by the society", she says "There’s no doubt that musical technique is useful, infact I’m studying piano to the Musical Institute of Aosta, but in my opinion Music is something more. The most important thing is always and anyway being ourselves". The Katia Garofalo that comes out from the 8 pieces of the CD "Karyokinesis", recently published, makes curious and disquiets with a music that remember what Shakespeare made it say to Polonio in the Hamlet "Despite the crazyness, there is method too". The key for entering is in the title of the CD, "Karyokinesis". As it happens with the cell division, her music is minimalistic with notes that reproduce themselves again apparently the same but in the reality different. The result is a static effect of estrangement that makes remember the first Battiato, one artist admired by her, (It’s not a case that "Karyokinesis" is the title of one of his song from "Foetus"- 1971). The autobiographical lyrics talk about the two topics spinning around our existence: LOVE and DEATH. Love is meant as impalpable, spiritual. DEATH, widely meant as change, makes take a deep breath of it in pieces like "Cemetery" (where u can hear passing bells). The world opinion of the Garofalo is pessimist, a world infected by the virus of "The Obtusity Syndrome". She sings: "Have you talent? Bad for you! We can’t accept it! You must be empty! Intelligence, sobriety r deplorable vices now. They control your mind sucking your essence".
