I saw you had Tender surrender at your signature.
Check out blender surrender.
The most funny clip ever if you know the song well or play it yourself...and pretty difficult to make it this way too.
I love that guy who made it.He's very nice.
Steve's facial expression with this sound is hillarious.

and his fingers!!!!!

that too, lol

And volitan if you're truly sincere about your endeavors, than the answer doesn't even lie with equipment

Its the fingerwork as george and many others pointed out

you can play like prince just by playing with the minor pentatonic scale and a sort of half modal playing...(sometimes mixing it with blues)

His soloing is based on basing pretty melodic licks (santana wise) and mixing them with harsh stabs and guitar grunts, (hendrix wise)
The way he gets his guitar sounds is majorly by that type of playing...
He has a predilection for extravagant bends and vibrato...

And he seems to like to do alot of runs now...(shredding wise)
Equipment can only do so much if you don't have the chops

anything else you need?

Princes sound in essense swings more towards santana than hendrix
he likes pretty tones...
stuff with alot of chorus, a little bit of fuzz etc and maybe wah...
i aint getting into specifics though...

I hear and see more Hendrix in his style

Prince's tone is never consistent, and it is really nothing special or that unique.

Just some boss pedals, a whammy, a wah and some rack effects. He is pretty straight forward, and does nothing special as far as guitar effects go, like he did with drum programming.

The main thing is his tone is never consistent. His best tones to me have been Secret Gig bootleg cd, some of the ONA concerts, TRC cd, and the musuicology acoustic sets.

Gear: Boss turbo Distortion DS-2, Blues Driver Flanger, Digitech Whammy, Boss Vibrato - just to name a few

The EMG pickups in his strat, cloud and symbol guitars are a huge part of his sound. EMGs have a knack of sounding the same in whatever guitar you throw them into - I find that his strat, cloud and symbol guitars all display that over-the-top but tight mega gain that EMGs do so well.

I think the White Symbol was the first (of his guitars) to have a Floyd on it. And of course his Strats do now as well
Maybe we can go to the movies and cry together

Go for it. It's probably change the sound of your bridge pickup though, since the bridge plate is a huge part of a tele's bridge pickup sound..

Duh. Not trying to. Merely a question of curiosity, my man. I don't play that kind of music anyway unless I'm just keeping up on chops or just dicking around in general.

PS: The holier than thou attitude isn't needed. I'm not no n00b playing on some squier strat through a solid state combo.
[Edited 9/18/07 1:23am]

Wasn't holier than thou, im just tired of cats trying to sound like Prince when they never will,
cause it isn't only just the pedals and amps that he uses,
It has alot to do with his rack gear, especially when recording in the studio...

and if it was truly out of sheer curiosity, than details to the setting of pedals, is something ludicrous to ask...

You know, Raphael Sadiq did a pretty darn good job of sounding like Prince on D'Angelo's "Untitled (How Does it Feel)". He nailed it, in my opinion and I've been a Prince fam for 27 years. It can be done. cool

Maybe you should come down a few notches and listen again.I guess you're the "expert" but I still say that song overall sounds like Prince.Besides, Prince has even given D'Angelo props. You can't argue with that. cool

I got nothing wrong with that song or Album, i think the voodoo sessions were funkier than prince...
But i just don't think the guitar work sounds anything like Prince...
