Prince's Guitar Effects Rack Just a quick note. I was at the Marquee aftershow this weekend and was lucky enough to be at the very front and could see all the equipment in good detail.
The effects Price had included a cry baby, rotovibe, quite a few Boss individual pedals (blues driver, whammy, vibrato, humaniser and harmoniser), another distortion pedal (seems to have 2 distortion pedals on at the same time??) and also a pre-set control pedal set-up that had names like "asian", "clean", "twin", "sick", "pillow talk", "whammy" and a couple others i couldnt quite make out. Anyway, i thought it was real interesting seeing Takumi and the others set-up and thought id share it with any other folk who are interested/nosy like me

Great post - thanks daf! It's always cool to hear what the man is playing.
I always thought Boss were a bit bland, if extremely durable, pedals. But obviously he makes it work for him. What I'd like to know is what guitars/amps have made it on his records. I mean, it can't all be cloud guitars and Hohner Telecasters, right?

Actually there's a great article in Guitar One (1999/2000) from around the Rave CD which went into detail on Prince's guitar setup. It lays it all out and shows exactly what he uses. I was surprised by his Boss choice too, but hey, it works. He actually has two different cabinet channels for clean and dirty. I think they're mostly Peavey amps. He also runs all of it through some rack gear with things like a Behringer Denoiser and the module for the pedal controller.
I think he currently plays the Hohner Tele, the cloud, the Azerwald (symbol) Habibi, and a hollow body seen in the Rave DVD (can't remember the name/make though, maybe Epiphone).

He hasnt played the cloud on this tour and the hollow body is an Ibanez. Im going the next 2 nights so if im lucky enough to get close again then ill check out other stuff amps/speaker etc

For those that are interested in the "rack" effects he uses...the last I knew he was using two Zoom 9030 units for the more processed sounds he achieves.
I use a Zoom 9050 and can duplicate alomost any sound I hear on his records.

I'd guess Boss Metalzone was in there somewhere...

He's been using this twin distortion effect for years. I love this sound. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.
