I tried it out during the last month at college & its fantastic. How much would this set me back?

I know a few of you have it, either your very rich, lucky or know someone who knows someone lol

IceNine is right. You start at $10,000. Good news is that it's half as much as it was about five years ago and can do so much more now. You don't need a Mac, but I suppose it works better on one. the prodessional version starts at much more than 10,000.
10k is only for the cards and computer, but you need one of their interfaces too, which ads a bit more to the price.

But...you can try the new Digi 002, it's only $2,500.
You can use it on your PC too, but you'll need a Firewire interface.

Welcome to the world of Pro Tools, I've been enjoying this system in the studios I've worked with for the past 6+ years. Amazing program.
I did post production, music and dubbing on these systems, and I gotta tell ya, I haven't seen any other system as friendly and as easy and as powerful as the Protools.

whatever you do, don't choose the 882.
It would be pitty to waste your money on such an expensive system and settle for a lousy interface like the 882.
At least go for the 888.
The Prices Ice Nine is talking about are prices you might find in the market, yeah. but why not go further and buy from ebay at probably half the price?


I hear they're about to launch Pro Tools 6 soon.
I wonder what changes they'll make...

$24,000 Retail for an HD system.

Unless you plan on opening a studio (which means BUILDING rooms and such, forget about it. Just snag a DIGI001 or a DIGI002 (shipping soon) for now. Runs on the same software, just the hardware is different.

If you are strapped for cash go get ProTools Free. The new version ony runs on WinXP so be aware of that (same with CubaseSX BTW).

I don't run ProTools but it is BY FAR the EASIEST multitracking software you could use.

If you want a full on Pro Tools system, or even just a DIGI001, shoot me an ORG note and we'll talk numbers.

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here is the limitations ProTools has as far as tracks and plug-ins go.
It just depends on the type of music you are recording. I've heard your music and a DIGI would be fine for you.

If you're really serious about building a nice suite there are SEVERAL MUCH less expensive options (Alesis ADATHD24 with either an analogue or digital mixer ie Mackie 248, D8B, Tascam DM24.

I must have read it wrong, but the new version of Protools free doesn't run only on WinXP. actually it's for Win98/ME still. they didn't upgrade the version they put out in the first place. the only versions that might be only for Win XP are the non-free versions, but again, there are still old versions for Win98/ME that you can download.

I'd still go with the Digi002, unless you go for CubaseSX with Houston controller.

I COULD be wrong about the free version since I really only have to deal with the folks who actually have the 001 etc.

Just did a 001 setup for a dude and remember reading that the new version 5.32 or whatever it is was XP only.

I have Pro Tools and it is quite decent but I STILL prefer Logic Audio!
