Self portraits

Should every artist create one?
Is it essential to an artist's portfolio?

The model is free and when you're ready to paint(or draw), they're willing to sit still. Take advantage of this subject until you get tired of looking at him/her. It's not essential to a portfolio but it may be essential to build your skill.

I agree with building skill.

Any thoughts on using "other" media as represntation?
While I believe most artist at least attempt to do a self portrait
for some, the process can be too personal or vain.

"No matter what subjects artists choose, the one subject that all share is that of themselves, the self portrait.
Self portraits are not just a reflection of what they look like but also of how the artist interprets themselves and the world around them.It is perhaps the most personal story that the artist can tell and makes the self portrait one of arts most important subjects"

Once you get past the technical benefits, the self portrait, is different for each artist. In many ways, every piece of art you create (regardless of medium or subject) reveals a bit of the artist.

Some, like Frida (below), revealed her life and pain through the self portraits. Others did it with landscapes.

some artist make it easier than others.
and challenge us at the same time.

Keith Haring

It's the challenge of seeing the part/parts that represent the artist in a different medium, that I find interesting.

Much of Haring's work was deliberate, political, socially aware etc...That speaks about an artist in obvious ways. But, even if the piece is decorative(like this one), much was also autonomous, so the subconscious/true artist will have found his way in. In this, you see many of the familiar shapes/connections that you find in his more personal sexual pieces. You can't really hide from yourself.

Same for Pollock. Though he was basically challenging art and what we see as art, his work was also autonomous, so he lives in the drips.

In this regard , would everything an artist creates be considered a self portrait?

After each item was glued,
several layers of polyurethane were applied.

the black oil paint on canvas took months to dry.
