Does anyone else here teach professionally?

Hey Cloud Nine, yeah I teach drums/percussion full-time in High Schools, as well as being very active playing gigs/shows and writing and recording.
I read in an earlier post that you teach drums also, it would be very interesting to compare our ideas on that one, let me know.

Yes deffinatly, Im very new to teaching & it was a daunting experience to suddenly be asked teach at 17. For ages I was worried that I didnt know enough about the drums myself let alone to teach someone else.

But sure enough a year later I love it. I teach at a music school in Luton England. We specialise in music tuition (I dont think there is an instrument we dont teach), Rehersal Room Hire & Recording Studios. Its called Greenbank Music Village & I am the main Drum/percussion teacher there.

We did a student concert last month & three of my pupils were in it. I cant explain the feeling I got seeing them up on stage playing good music & remembering when they first came to me & couldnt play a note. Its a reward in itself & Im starting to truely believe that passing the gift of music on to someone else is in some ways better than having the gift yourself.

I started drums at 3 & took lessons at 7 from a 70 year old Big Band drummer. Hes been playing 50 years now & at 80 is still drumming & teaching me. More details of my musical upbringing can be found here.

So how about you. What other kinds of percussion do you teach & do you teach reading & rudiments?

Yeah I teach in five secondary/high schools in Scotland, I've been doing it since I finished studying.
Like yourself I find it very rewarding, to see my students progress to playing gigs or being accepted into college/Uni music courses.
I do make sure that reading and rudiments are part of their courses of study, each manage it to a different degree as I'm sure you'll find also.
The instruments covered are kit/snare/timps/tuned, although my area is really kit and snare.
Are you busy with gigs at the moment?

I wish I was busy with gigs at the moment . I have a band but its very difficult for me to find musicians of my own age that have been playing for as long as I have. Thats why Im focusing on my solo project

Have gigs tomorrow afternoon & night, the afternoon is a swing band and in the evening I'm in Edinburgh with a band called 'Soul Train', a funky outfit mostly playing motown and soul.

Your site is incredible, as is your drive and devotion to your work, you deserve to get your chance, I hope you do.

What's the scene in Luton like?

Thanx for the kind words . The luton scene doesnt exist, its all nightclubs playing garage, drum & bass & house here

My studio partner Frank Axtell teaches guitar, bass and keyboards.

Too bad you don't live in the U.S.

We are thinking of adding a teaching section to the new studio website. and offering video lessons as well.

I teach third grade -- seriously. Does that count?
