Stanton is a good make, good sound, comfortable as well...mine cost about $100.00CAN, they are frickin sweet sounding. Buy them at a musicians store that deal in musical instruments and ask the guys that work there what they suggest. You shouldn't have to shell out more than $100.00 for a really decent pair.

Best bang 4 buck? Sony V900 or 700's.

I just bought some Audiotechnicas M20 for about $50. They were comfortable to me and sound pretty good. But everyone's different, so I wouldn't buy what someone else suggests.

Most headphones regular people listen to with their stereos are colored with eq so they sound nice. In the studio a lot of people like flat response, which is more accurate for mixing but doesn't sound as pretty, perhaps.

Leo's Pro Audio on Telegraph has a bunch set up so you can try them on and listen to them.

I'm with NDRU on this one.

Overrated as they are, they work well for me because of their neutral EQ and Volume: BeyerDynamic DT-100's.

Cheap Headsets (mine were about £70 GBP), one-time industry standard (I think the DT-150's have taken over for not much more), replaceable parts and give a good response for recording.

I use the cheapest ones I can find and then once i've mixed with those, I listen in the car and then on the bose speakers just to double check...it always works that if it sounds good on the POS headphones (piece-of-shit) then it sounds GREAT on everything else...but maybe it's just me...
