"Guitar" chords

OK, now I'm in the right forum. Like I said, I'm not funky enough to nail these down. I get D, C and G but they don't sound quite right.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

i am not "experienced" but know chords and such. Are you asking from a beginner stand point about playing those chords? What about them is it that doesn't sound right? Kinda hard to answer that question without knowing how they are sounding. (1) if you are not fretting at the right place (right behind the fret) this will affect the sound (lot of buzzing), likewise if you don't apply the appopriate pressure. (3) not fretting directly on top of the string, allowing your finger to touch the adjacent string will mute the adjacent string. (3) if the guitar is out of tune, the strummed chords will not sound harmonious whatsoever.

to determine if frettting is the problem. Finger the chord, then play each string one at a time listening for any buzzing sound or muted sound. this will show if you are fretting the strings correctly. if you are, then probably needs to be tuned.

Presuming you're fretting the chords correctly...

What kind of guitar do you have? How new is it?

My Columbo-style hunch is that it's either out of tune, or even more likely, the intonation of the guitar (basically how all the notes sound in relation to eachother) is out. Easy fix either way. If you can answer my questions, I'll be able to give you a clearer answer.

In-tune Telecaster. I know I'm in the right key, but the natural chords just don't sound as funky as what Prince is playing. Especially the natural G.

So you are saying the chorus is D-C-G and the verses are D-C?

As the wonderful txladycat explained, some important lessons there regarding fretting of notes etc..

However, if its the chords u are having trouble with i would say its becaus eu are playing them in 'open' position. Playing in open position u aint never gonna get no funk. Ive just picked my 6 string up. try this, see if its an improvement. if not maybe u can adapt it or take something from it. just using the two top strings (the thinest) try this. each chord is 4 beats to the bar then change. but strum using a solid 8th note pattern

e--12--
b--10--

e--10-
b--8--

e--10--
b--10--

give it a whirl. it may offer some help. not saying its a 100% accurate - just a guide.

There are two answers to that question, hundreds and none.

Hundreds because there are a lot of guitar players on here, at various levels of ability. And this is the section of the site allocated for people who, amongst many other artistic pursuits, play instruments and want to talk about that.

and..

None because you don't have to go through any of them - just don't open them if they aren't of relevance or interest to you.

The tricky thing would be indicating whether the chords for a particular song or whatever are available within a particular thread, and negotiating discussions that might arise from one song that would cut across all the other songs being tabbed or posted. Could get mighty confusing eek

Thanks Rowdy...I wasn't really expecting an answer I guess...it was kind of a
rhetorical question....

And yes, I do understand the reason now for so many...I don't play the guitar
so therefore I really shouldn't have said anything at all.

Carry on.....

LMAO, now I understand some of y'all's responses!

I *know* how to make chords; been playing for 25 years. LOL, I was scratching my head, thinking "I know Txladykat knows I can play the guitar, what is this basic advice about fretting she's giving me?" LOL.

I'm talking about the Prince song, "Guitar". Hope y'all have heard it, it's funky as can be.

I've just hit one of those all-too-common bumps where I'm not playing the right variation of the basic chords of the song. For instance, I'm pretty sure the verse chords are derivatives of D and C, and the chorus chords are derivatives of D, C and G (I don't know, maybe that's a Bb).

Man, I bet y'all thought I was some spaced out looney tune. Kind of like someone asking, "Why do pianos have white and black keys?"

LOL, I will be laughing about this all day long.
