strumming hand technique? Ok, I wanted to hear from some others orgers on this. I taught myself to play with the side of the index finger and thumb. A guitarist I have been working with on technique suggested I try to relearn picking by holding it between my fingertips. He had me sample it that way and indicated that the sound was much better than the way I was doing it.
I find it difficult, and of course would have to retrain myself...but, just wondered others approaches. How do you hold the pick when you play rhythm? How do you hold the pick when you play lead?

I can't really visualise how you've been laying, but I find my picking technique has evolved in all kinds of directions. I generally hold the pick between the flat of my index finger and thumb, pretty much like the guy in this pic:
It alters slightly depending on what I'm playing - something with a fairly hard tone will require the pick being gripped harder, something softer the opposite. To pull off pinch harmonics, I have to roll my fingers over the pick a bit to get the pinch. If I were you, I'd search for various picking techniques and tricks - things like alternate picking, pinch harmonics, and have a go. Soon enough you'll develop a better picking vocabulary and settle into a style of your own.
