If I was planning to play a song like Purple Rain, HELL YES! That's a gift from the gods right there!
But I know what you mean about water on the violin. Once I started playing with the Punk Rock Orchestra we were crammed into small bar rooms with people banging against each other in the most pit and once, there was some beer flying. not good for the violin

I used to play my expensive acoustic in clubs and my violin and case would smell like an ashtray for a week Not to mention, at one club, I was playing freestyle improvisation with a dj playing house music and someone tripped over my pickup cord and knocked my acoustic on the floor. Didn't do any damage, thank goodness, except for knocking the strings out of tune. But that was it for me--I was so freaked out I had to leave the gig. I used to play for this band that did a lot of outdoor private gigs in the summer. Sure enough, one of the gigs was threatening rain. I used my electric and the few drops that did show up didn't do any harm.

Wow, I would totally freak out about the acoustic getting knocked around. I'm always freaking out about owning this fragile expensive object anyway without it getting knocked around. Did I ever mention I broke the fingerboard off a violin once? I also snapped a bow in half once.

I was so mad, I threw my bow. And "SNAP". I told my mom I wanted to quit and when she saw the broken bow, she said something like, "Alrighty, then." I quit for about nine months and then picked it back up and didn't quit again. [Edited 2/11/07 20:38pm]

THANK YOU!! Great documentary. A lot of this I already knew--but my students are always fascinated by what in the WORLD would make a violin cost $4 million. I will be forwarding these links to them.
