Org Musicians Prince Tribute CD

Just wanting to throw this out there...would it be legal for us org musicians to do a Prince tribute album? I have a cover version of "Something In The Water (Does Not Compute)" that I recorded this weekend. Do any of you have Prince cover songs?

As long as we didn't sell it, it would be ok.

I think Lewis was trying 2 get this 2gether.

I have a great cover of "Strange Relationship"

It would be very illegal, thats why I havnt done my Prince tribute yet, still waiting for permission from Prince's company. Even if the tracks are free, its illegal.

Its a nice idea though & I'll keep ya'll posted on my search for permission wink

You know, I would love to show you all the version I recorded. And as you know, I don't charge for my music on my sites. But, since it seems to be an issue, I will leave the song off all of my CD's and sites until Lewis or Ben come back with an answer.

You know, I would ask Prince himself, and I know he would dig my cover of it. I would give him all royalties of the song if by some strike of lightning I actually started SELLING my CD's, but no one seems to want to buy my stuff anyhow.

Not if you're going to put it up on a web site for people to listen to, or to sell it. You'd need to buy the license to cover the songs beforehand for that. You have to take into consideration that people could potentially record the cover and distribute it in any way they want - that would lead to trouble. It would be different if it was just for private use, i.e. not available for potentially being recorded by others and used illegally.

Here's another example; if college students in a music class (or just any music class) were to record a song that already exists by another artist or group (making it a cover song), they could use and distribute that recording among the students in the class to discuss, study, examine as much as they wish. Just as they could do the same with an existing authorized recording by a recording artist. That's an example of "fair use." That fair use does not consist of using that cover song in public (in a club, at a diner, etc.), or making it for sale.

I just bought a studio 4 my room about a week ago, and my first project was 2 cover "She's Always In My Hair". I extended it and made it a mix between the original version and the Rave Un2 the Year 2000 live version. That could go on the cd. I think this tribute project would be a good idea.
