Do You Keep a Extra pair of Music Ears around?

do you have a Music Buddy be it they play or don't but just always seems to be in Tuned to Music that keeps you honest with your work? where they suggest things or tell you which Song works&which Doesn't?? much Like how Andre Cymone was for Prince a extra pair of Musical Ears?

It's tough. My brother is my biggest fan, but he's certainly biased, and most of my friends are either biased or don't have an ear for music. I prefer to hear from strangers, if their criticism is constructive. nod

The main trouble I encounter is finding people of my own age who have been playing music as long as I have or are as serious about it as I am. Ive played with a few bands my age but they were all mainly rock based (no funk or Jazz?). I practise about 4 hours everyday now I you'd be lucky if any of them had picked up an instrument since our last rehersal (we rehersed weekly).

Id say my Dad is my spare musical ears. Hes my inspiration for everything musical really.

But Lewis, what people of your own age have the appreciation of music that you have? Most people I've known don't even like jazz until they're well into their 20s (usually older). You seem to have a good understanding of music history, American roots of music no less while living in the UK. You do very well with soul and funk and even some jazz orchestrations from what I've heard so far. I'm not sure how many people your age have the knowledge to judge the merit of your musicianship. Also, I think your love for music outdoes most any person your age (any age really). Seems like you're at a level similar to where Prince was at that age. Of course, it helps that you also have a job in the music business, you've been raised by a good man, and you seemingly keep yourself out of problematic distractions. Stay focused and be careful not to get off track. I got off track and lost 10 years. I wish you better. wink

By the way, I checked out your dad's site. Cool. Looks like a Flash site but it isn't; tho it seems to take an especially long time to load for some reason. The design and navigation is great.
