Buddy Holly - True Love Ways... my way

Okay, Heather has convinced me to put some things up for people to listen to, so here is my very rocked out version of "True Love Ways" by Buddy Holly.

http://home.attbi.com/~ts...3pMix2.mp3

I still think that Buddy Holly would have rocked HARD if he had lived.

EDIT: Not Prince influenced in any way... and watch out for the sibilance... sorry about that.

Excellent. Great guitar work. Decent voice too. I'd love to hear something like this on the radio. Got any more Buddy Holly covers to share?

Found it a bit lifeless to be honest. Was a bit better when i cranked it up. Hate the drums... like your voice.. gtr was ok i guess... sorry dude.. juz my opinion.. But i do think your voice has a good tone to it.. I think Buddy Holly was way ahead of his time as a song writer... All the best with it

I think most of us are understandable that we don't each have a "Paisley Park Studios" to work with. Yeah, it'd be cool if you at least had some good drums to back that song up, but as it stands, it is still a very good song. I'd love to hear more when you get a chance.

Yeah... don't get me wrong, I HATE drum programs and drum machines but I sold my drum kit and I don't have any way to record live drums properly at home anyway... so I have to stick with the shitty drum programming.

What can you do?

I hear parts of this with open hi-hat sizzle, snare hitting on every down beat.

Yeah, I can see that happening...

I really should do a new drum program with that in mind... I just hate drum machines... well, in this case, drum sequences...

Where would you put the snare on all four? Would you choose the "throughout the days, our true love ways" part?

By the way, I was thinking of the Ramones when I did this song.

i was afraid of this when i saw this forum...i couldn't care less what equipment someone has or hasn't got..if someone asks what i think of a song... i'll give my honest opinion...i'm not under the illusion that i decide what is a good or bad song...it's simply a matter of personal taste.. i thought the drums were really bad..even for a drum machine.. i've heard great stuff that's been done with drum machines.. just a little more creativity and effort needed.. i think constuctive critisizm is very healthy.. if someone points out something they don't like in my music i think about what they've said with an open mind.. i don't reach 4 the excuse book.. i hope when i put a song up that people will be honest with me.. maybe we should change the name to "let's kiss each other's ass forum" i'll post an mp3 of me regurgitating and you can tell me how talented i am.

if ya aint happy..juz play the blues

MrBlues, I had a feeling I might get a response like yours. Have you heard JDODSON's songs? He's done some real cool stuff also, but if you construct your criticism of his music based on the equipment he has available to him, then I think you're lacking an appreciation for music. It's a very small step for IceNine to eventually add a different drum track, just as it's a very small step for Dodson to re-perform his songs once he gets more equipment. The song may "sound" better, but really it hasn't changed. By the way, I don't kiss asses. I don't agree with many of IceNine's beliefs, but I can't deny that IceNine's song is excellent, and as it stands (even with the drums), it's as good, if not better, than most rock songs on the radio. Plus, it's a great remake of a Buddy Holly tune -- why aren't more artists doing this?

I agree... the drums aren't the absolute best that they could be and I'm sure that if more time was spent on the drum sequence they could be better.

There wasn't much time spent on it at all... it was done for fun and for no other reason. I love this cover, and if time was spent on this song, or any of the covers he did quickly, it certainly could be improved.

Jasziah: I agree with wanting to hear more stuff like this on the radio. And, it is an excellent, rocked out version, of the orignial! I'm trying to convince him to post "Raining In My Heart" or Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him". Two of my favorite covers he's done!

firstly..my criticism had nothing to do with equipment..THAT'S MY POINT.. it was about what i heard...that's all...isn't that what music is about???... "the song may sound better, but it really hasn't changed" what's that all about???... i think the song is lifeless because the drums are bad..which detracts from the FEEL.. which is what people connect with..if you hear a song with a really bad solo, do you say "it's a very small step for them to redo the solo"? or the same if it is sung out of tune?.. i listen ..if i like it,i like it.. i'm honestly blown away by your bullshit.. and who cares about IceNine's beliefs...this was about a piece of music..anyway i think i've wasted enough time on you...you're obviously a moron

Okay... here is my take on the drum thing...

I hate drum machines/programs in general, but I REALLY hate them for rock music. I sequenced the drums into ProTools in one straight take with no effort... quick and to the point. In all honesty, that song took under two hours to record, including my transcribing the lyrics, learning the song on guitar and bass, programming the drum part, setting up the guitars and bass and recording the vocals. This includes two rhythm guitars a bass part and two guitars doubling the solo. Fairly quick work, really.

The songs that I record are just for my own personal amusement, as I have been signed, recorded and toured all around the country. I am absolutely not trying to get another record deal and I will not be touring again. I currently don't even have a band together, as I have no time to play anymore. That shit was VERY cool when I was in my twenties, but I just don't have the desire to do it anymore. This is why I didn't put more care into the drums... I just didn't care. I recorded the song for fun, simply because I love Buddy Holly and wanted to make the song rock.

Once again, I don't like the idea of drum machines on rock music at all and I would NEVER attempt to release a rock record with sequenced/programmed drums... it just never sounds right to me. Maybe it is because I hate drum machines and have never attempted to even learn to program one to feel like a person, but I haven't really found that option in ProTools anyway... sure, you have "Randomize" and "Swing" and things like that, but it really doesn't do the trick. Maybe I just don't know how to do it... which is probably the case...

Anyway, rock music should always be played with a band... but I currently just mess around at home for fun.

Thanks for the explanation, I was inquiring about the software because I'm using Cakewalk on a PC. The other funny thing is that the first thing I said was that I hate this MIDI drum sound. I mean HATE it.

So my friend recorded a bunch of different rythms on a 70's oversized Ludwig kit for me. Really big sound and everything has a mic. It's really cool to get a cd with drum tracks and loop them.

What I've tried recently was after I loop the drums then record a guitar and give it back to my friend who recorded the drums originally. He adds a bass line and gives it to a singer (that also uses Cakewalk) and its a weird way to write a song.

Thanks for sharing.

Yeah man... I cannot stand drum programs at all, but I couldn't use a sampler to do this song either... maybe some good live drum sounds would help, but the program would still be stale... you know what I'm saying?

I sold my drum kit, due to the neighbors not being too thrilled with loud drum sounds coming from the house in the evenings, so I cannot even think about recording live drums. I wish I could... that would be a million times better.

The way you do things sounds cool too! I have friends that have studios and play drums... I guess I could give them the tracks and have them play on it... that might be cool.
