Guitars for little kids?

Has anyone bought their toddler a guitar?

My girl is 3 1/2 and asking for one, since she sees her parents playing all the time... I've noticed that Strunal sells some 1/8-sized ones geared at 4-year-olds...

Anyone have experience in this domain, words of advice, etc? Would be nice for her to have something she could get a little sound out of, and yet not beat to pieces (she's not an especially destructive kid, but ya know...)

I'm not a parent, but thinking about it, have you thought about getting her a Ukulele? They're very cheap, pretty robust and easy to play. She'll be able to get noises out of it straight away, and it's no big financial loss if she does trash it. Whilst the guitar Frank points out is a fine instrument, it would be a great waste of money if she didn't take to it. Plus it seems a little on the large side for a toddler of that age.

Yes, I have thought of that, because I used to play with my mother's bass ukelele when I was around her age, and nothing ever bad happened to it...

And besides, what fun to have a ukelele around the house:

smile I'm going to start looking around locally... Thanks to both of you for your suggestions.
