Since piano was the first instrument I learned to play, I learned some of the classical songs from the book, some of which I don't remember because I don't play it that much. And I got sort of bored with that. The first non-classical song I learned was Bill Withers' "Lean On Me," and then the theme to Peanuts; I think it's called "Linus & Lucy."
On bass the first song I remember learning was Slave's "Slide." This post not for the wimp contingent. All whiny wusses avert your eyes.

when I was 12 I was already
taking piano lessons. however when I saw the purple rain movie 4 the first time and i heard the love theme(god) I knew I had 2 learn that 1. so I just watched the scene over & over 'til I had it. that's the 1'st tune I learned by ear. the 2'nd 1 I think was father's song from the same movie. peace/manki

I bought the Purple Rain songbook and told my piano teacher I wanted to play "Father's Song" -- he wasn't too sure at first until he played it and liked it. It was the first song I got to choose for myself! The very first song I played (outside of scales) was probably something like "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash. Boring.
