I played violin for many years, so I read music, but it's very violin specific. . .when I see a note, I don't think, "That's C", I think "That's second finger down on the A string." Limited usefulness. I can read music and sightsing pretty well, but I prefer to play by ear since it's how I write music; though, reading music does make it all much easier.
