Absolutely!!! I've opened up for "Jewel", had my tunes on Z95.3 FM in Vancouver BC, and 100.3 the Q in Victoria BC Canada, in regular rotation...I am releasing my debut solo effort by the end of November 2002. I am currently #31 on the MP3 "top 100 unsigned artist chart" on mp3.com, and have been climbin the chart every week. I am a huge Prince fan, and he continues to be my main inspiration as an artist. I should be clear that I sound nothing like Prince, nor do I try to, but he is my all time favourite artist! I plan to take it all the way.

To tell you the truth Cloud9, I have no idea how it works, but I have been getting daily plays on Mp3.com, so it must be a factor. I received an email from Mp3.com a few months ago advising me I had been placed on the top 100 chart, and they said they "liked my work"...I've heard some of your stuff, by the way, and I like what you are doing...very funky!

I have the skills of a pro, I just need the equipment of one. I have as much stuff as I can afford, and as you probably know SirJam, my talent is pro but my sound is semi-pro.

"Let's get down to business, Mental Self Physical Fitness".

Its about 25% mental, 15% talent and about 60% who you know, basically, your connections.
Now, commandment #1: There are only singers and songs - everything else is to benefit one of the two.
#2: Be original at all costs. Don't worry if your sound isn't mainstream. Just make sure its bangin'!
#3: XMF - Extreme Mental Focus. Be true to yourself and view yourself as a star. Focus on the details and sharpening your skills. Your mind does not know the difference between reality and imagination during mental preparation. Imagine yourself as what you aspire to be and your sub-conscious will train your brain to physically bring your thoughts, perceptions and images to life.
#4: Plan and prepare. Set goals, write them down with definate timelines. Be realistic. Set realistic goals.
#5: Music is the perfect bridge between right and left brain. It is mathematical yet emotional. Be true and respect both aspects. In the end, you will expand and grow as your mind grows. Your music will evolve and take on a life of its own.
#6: Only write hits. (Check out the story of one of my favorite writers, Diane Warren at www.dianewarren.com). This is an important concept to grasp, but to be successfull, it is a necessity. You have to feel it. The people have to feel it. When listening to your track, the most important factor is the emotion. Does it make your head bounce? Does it make you happy? Does it make you sad? If not start again and again and again until you develop consistency. The key is to be an effective communicator with your target audience, which leads back to planning.
#7: Establish contacts and connections early on. Learn politics, the barter system and define who you are - your limits and what you are willing to sacrifice to complete the mission.
#8: Surround yourself with positive people. Learn the business for yourself. Remember you management, attornies, accountants, publishers, etc. all work for you! Not the other way around.
#9: Don't be stupid. Weigh all sides and options carefully. If you're an artist and someone offers you a publishing deal as a writer, if its a good deal, take it! If you're good you're gonna get yours in the lime (Limelight) eventually.
#10: Do not get discouraged. Don't give up on your dreams...
